There were mortgages. Dad was making more, but was able to buy a 3 bedroom house in the suburbs. I think the rule of thumb was you'd qualify if your payments were not more than 25% of you pay - don't remember if that was before tax or take home.
Sad to think Saget is dead, as well as most of those listed (singers and atheletes).
