A true Texas fact

A grandfather or two of some people I know, except for the guy with the 12 on his cap - Dizzy Dean. Always thought it was the guy who looks like he has sweater over his right arm, keeping his pitching arm warm. But the daughter of the guy who owned the dealership I bought my first car from swears that guy is her great uncle George Muelder. Taken in New Braunfels in 1929

The REAL Friday Night Lights! This was 1972 at the Rock Pile - otherwise known as Alamo Stadium. Seguin HS vs San Antonio Lee regular season. Seguin fans are the ones across the field (about a 40 mile drive to get there) Now don't look for me - this is halftime and I would be in the moldy, stinky visitor's locker room probably getting my butt chewed out!

Now, for my 4 years we lost to them 8 times - 4 in regular season and 4 times in the state 4A quarterfinals. Geez, we were plowboys who played everyone who came out to play and they had tryouts and were able to pick the best available - plus they had like 3 times more students to pick from. Plus they had 2 future NFLer's (inc their QB) and a future MLBer! This is how the brackets usually ended up for us.

High school football in west Texas is amazing. Entire towns shutdown to attend the games. How many times has Odessa Permian won the championship?
 
Too d---ed many times! If I do say so. I think 5 or 6 times. Had a roommate in college - we got along before, but after we didn't - all he could talk about that year was Odessa Permian and how good they were! and dip and spit!

The year before San Antonio Lee won it. And the 2 years after Tyler won it. But O-P has won it several times over the years. But then again there was some cheat'n going on in the West. Rumor was that there would be a number of oilmen/lease owners that would go around to the rigs and recruit roughnecks who had not completed high school. Would pay them to go back to high school and play football. Sixteen year olds might be lining up against twenty five year olds. Supposedly the Association instigated an age limit to stop that!

Y'all should see the stadium they have in Odessa, it puts some of the NFL stadiums to shame!

The year my folks retired and moved away I was a junior at Midland Lee and we beat Permian…..lost in first round of playoffs, but we beat Permian!!!

I was watching Texas and that running back they had , Ricky Williams. Announcers gave the high school and it was Midland Lee. Got on the internet and saw where they had won 2 or 3 championships with him. Proud of my old school.
 
Yeah, but if you flattened out Europe (like flattening a piece of wadded up tin foil) to match Texas' elevation, it'd be twice as big. Consider the highest point in Texas is Guadalupe Peak, 8,700 something feet. And the mean height of the Swiss Alps is over 9,000ft. Then add in the Pyrenees and the Italian Alps and you get the point. There's a lot more up and down in Europe that Texas doesn't have.

Just finished re-reading (or, rather, listening to on Audible) Michener's Texas.

Texas has such an interesting history, and I think Michener did a nice job weaving his stories through it. Recommended reading if you haven't already. Chesapeake is next for me - it was one of my favorites as a late teen.
 
Just found Chesapeake at my favorite thrift store and will probably read it this coming fall. The Chesapeake area has always fascinated me after reading about it's market hunting, crabbing and oyster industries.

Texas I've read it. They taught us how to read where I'm from - didn't have to listen to it! Only comment, not enough brisket mentioned!

I feel like I actually learned some cultural things from both Centennial and Texas. I had forgotten about Chesapeake , thanks for that unintended reminder.
