Saw this in a video but could not understand the name of the supposed manufacturer. Very clever. In the middle of the handle there is a freely rotating cross piece that looks to make it much easier to use this shovel than traditional ones. You can make the cross piece perpendicular to the shaft, providing a much better lifting grip.

Thanks, Eric. Wonder why it was discontinued. Pricy, but hey ...

EDIT: Shamrock Supply Co. still has them on-line. Three types:

and apparently at some point they planned more types:

That's one of those that I think I'd want to try before using. Interesting concept, but not sure they would work as well as advertised. To my eye, the pivot point looks to be positioned poorly to how I handle shovels, but hard to tell looking at a picture.

I use this cheapo from Wally world, and it the best I've tried. Same double handle, but the short one is flexible.

There has been an ergonomic study of the 4 types of snow shovels and, interestingly, the bent shaft model (which is what I use) was rated as slightly better than the other two on the right (and a lot better than the basic model) in terms of minimizing spine compression in use. Mine has a longer upper part, with the bend being quite close to the shovel end. It's very effective and easy to use.

Available for ergonomic research: One driveway, approximate dimensions 30ft X 60ft, elevation gain approximately 5 ft. Driveway is composed of macadam asphalt with black seal coat. All snow must be removed and piled off the road at the top of the driveway. Provider will call or text within a 24 hour window with a notification when snow accumulation is predicted to be 3inches or more. The morning of research, the provider will call or text with the current snow depth and whether more snow accumulation is expected. Researchers may use any method that doesn't damage the driveway and must complete snow removal within 3 hours of starting. Current long range forecast for driveway area is La Nina, starting in Oct and lasting thru March. Therefore, multiple opportunities to conduct research expected over the next 5 months. Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to test snow removal methodology and tools, collect ergonomic and metabolic data, obtain body efficiency metrics, etc.
