To help me keep track, here is the continuation our running list:

@Big Ry the seller told me he had a piece carbon dated. I don’t have the documentation, just going off what he told me. He’s been pretty honest and straightforward with me over the years, so I trust him for whatever that’s worth. He had several logs, not sure if he had them all tested.

Thanks. Yeah it seems like that would be the only real way to get a number like that. I wonder how he even concluded it was old enough to carbon date. I feel like it would have to be an extinct species or something.

@Steelart99 I imported in from SouthEast Australia. I believe it’s from the state of South New Wales. I believe the guy I got it from had a piece of one of the logs carbon dated to about 10,000 years. I don’t have documentation just going off what the seller told me

If you had another piece of this, I'd be interested. It would go with my sabretooth tiger bone and meteorite Damascus steel knife creations.

I'd be interested in a knife handle size (1" x 1-1/2" x 6") or a bowl size (6-8" square by about 2-3" thick). Alternately, a set of knife scales (set of 2: 1-1/2" x 1/4" x 6")

@SA-Motors you ok with me sending the Neila/broken hill gidgee like this? I broke my hand, so I’m having an assistant help me cut when he can. This is a tough wood to cut and I don’t trust him to square it up nicely . It’s currently a little over 2” thick and a good width, but it’s oddly shaped it places. It’d still only be $40 since that’s what I said for the spindle blank.

I’m directing my younger brother how to make the cuts right now. That Brocken hill gidgee is the toughest wood I’ve ever cut. I’ll have some more pictures for you shortly. I’m still fun bossing my brother around some

@SA-Motors this isn’t Australian, but I’ve got this Brazilian Rosewood blank. It’s 1 1/2” square and like 42” long. It’s got a bow at around 24” from the one direction. I’d be willing to cut half for $80 or sell you both half’s for $100 since I’m not sure you’d get a proper spindle blank from the other side.

and yes we’ve become good friends. There is 13.5 years between us. I was working at a job with a lot of mandatory overtime during his teenage years. But now that I’m out of that crappy place we’ve been working together on a lot of wood projects.

@SA-Motors yes. To my knowledge. It’s coated it wax, but I got it from a highly reputable seller on eBay. I’ve gotten a few bowl blanks of D. nigra since, so this will probably just sit there till the end of time at this point. I figured I’d show you in case you might be interested

Sure, I’ll do that in the next bit here. I’m debating just cutting it in half now. If I could smell it I’d be 110% certain

Hi @Friedrich9 If you can tell 110% from cutting it, do you mind cutting off 1/4 inch from the end to check it, rather than cutting it in half? You would also be able to look at the endgrain. If its D. Nigra, I'd like the whole piece! If it turns out to be amazon or honduran rosewood, although nice woods, I would pass on it, as I have some of those already. I did 2 cuts. Probably 1/4” total. End grain looks correct. Second cut I got close to the miter saw with my nose while I cut it,(very safely of course.) and it definitely has the right Brazilian rosewood smell. So I’m 99.9% sure it’s Brazilian rosewood. Which makes me feel better. I bought a really big board from him to make bowl blanks a few years ago. I’m afraid to cut it it was so expensive lol

I had a nice wide and long piece of teak that I held onto for a long time for just the right project that never seemed to come along. I finally made 3 cutting boards out of it for my parents and my family, and glad I did, otherwise it would still be unused. lol.

That western myall is gorgeous and the bees wing figure in the first one definitely deserves to be called mastergrade. When I see quality figure like this it’s all in guitar blanks. (I don’t need any of those I have a source for some Australian desert species and honestly apart from the figure the first one doesn’t strike me much. And in Austria we have maple for figured wood mich like you Americans also have maple)
