Completed a 6” Black Cherry bowl from a blank that was given to me by a friend in Northern Pennsylvania. Actually started it a number of years ago, and if I recall, it flew off the lathe and broke. The original size was probably about an 12” round. I was pretty discouraged as I thought the wood was quite handsome! I set it aside for a number of years, and finally pulled it back out to make something from it. Trying to preserve as much of the wood as possible, the side kind of took on a shape of its own. Of course, turning Cherry is delightful, and the sawdust has a great fragrance. Easy to sand. I finished the bowl with 7 coats of Wipe-on Poly Gloss, followed by 3 coats of Renaissance Wax. Took the pics in the bright sun, so there is a bit of glare on the surface. Chuck IMG_3947.jpeg IMG_3948.jpeg IMG_3949.jpeg

Nice job Chuck! Good on you that you saved the bowl.

Alan mentions a shallower mortise as a possibility. You might try a tenon sometime too (can't remember if you have done that?). You can use part of the tenon as a foot, if you so desire, which will allow for some extra depth to your workpiece. Keep up the good work anyway..........

Super form—very classy. A more shallow mortise would allow a deeper turning inside.
Thanks! Started this bowl about 9 years ago when I was less experienced. And it started out as a much larger bowl before it broke. It is a very deep mortise, and was actually deeper in the beginning! Lots of lessons learned since then. The wood was just so pretty that I couldn’t put it in the burn pile. Chuck

Thanks! As mentioned, I started this as a much larger bowl nearly a decade ago. It took awhile for me to get around to redoing it because I was so frustrated it broke. Since then, most often I have used tenons when making bowls. I’ve used waste blocks with smaller turnings or shallow turnings. Chuck

And you should also be using that TSS you have instead of having it collect dust. . ............ Nubs

Great point! This particular bowl I started well before I bought that TSS from you. It flew off the lathe about 9 years ago. I had to cut it down significantly to even get this much smaller blank from it. Chuck

Hey Chuckie ole boy, that's a lame excuse. The TSS can be used on pretty much any form even if it was started 100 years ago or today. It doesn't recognize age. I'm done here with this statement. Just trying to be funny
Now, you could put that piece back on the lathe and cut down the mortise, using the TSS to hold it in place. Or even cut the bottom thinner from the inside if you have the material, then remove some of the mortise depth.

If you wood like some instruction, please ask and I will try to accommodate. ........ Nubs

What’s a TSS?

TMDA! *

*too many damn abbreviations
TSS = tarpon slime sunscreen. I used to use that as my screen name on another board. If you've ever gotten tarpon slime on you, you know how hard it is to get off. So I figured if you could take tarpon slime and add some sun block to it, it'd be an awesome sunscreen for people who get wet or sweat etc.
