Ocooch has added Blue Beetle Pine to their list of species if anyone is looking. I know its not the easiest to find, and the price is very good as usual. Who knows how long their stock will last.

Ocooch notes that they cultivate the blue fungus staining, as opposed to it being a natural byproduct of beetle infestation...not sure if this impacts value but figured it was worth pointing out in case. I personally only care about the color, so I already have a stack heading my way!

I thought it was difficult to keep Pine from blue staining? Summer cut lumber will turn in days without proper handling.Maybe it is a regional thing?

No idea 🤷🏻 i don't pay softwoods much attention usually. The white pine i cut up from my yard got stained while drying but it's not blue.. It's more brown/gray to green. We shall see just how blue this blue pine from ocooch is. I noticed the janka hardness they listed for it was piss poor, so it's a pretty soft pine unfortunately.

Not surprised. If it is a white pine, the hardness just isn't there...
Yup, i got some white pines on my property, one of which came down in a storm so i cut it up and stored it. The stuff is like balsa wood it's so light and soft. Obviously I'll need to use this blue pine for projects that won't get handled, or I'll need to encase it in epoxy.

Got the wood today. Not the bluest I've seen, unfortunately. Pictured below are the bluest faces of each board. Some have very little blue on the other side.

This is the single bluest board, though the lighting washes out the color a lot. You can see the color better in the damage photos at the bottom where I'm blocking the light.

And as i alluded to above, several pieces have quite a bit of damage to them. These seem to be from ocooch, as the box itself was undamaged. The largest areas of damage are roughly 1/4" deep. I'm debating emailing them about this, since it really kinda destroys the ability to use the boards for anything other than short (~18" long) projects. It's such inexpensive wood, but there are 4 out of 6 boards with damage...

I would definitely notify them, at a minimum. If they will do this for "cheap" wood, they might relax the standards for more expensive wood. Chuck

Ive probably placed like 25 orders with Ocooch at this point, and they've never had issues like this. The only other issue I ever had was with my first order where I bought a handpicked bloodwood board and it was pretty severely twisted without them noting that in the listing. They just credited me the cost of the board, and I think I still have some of the board left somewhere, or maybe I gave the whole thing away in a trade. I cant remember at this point lol. But the reason for me buying this pine was because its seldom for sale, so I kind of want to have the wood and not a credit. But I also feel like I cant ask for them to replace 4 of 6 boards.

Local big box stores sells tongue and groove with very similar color variations and damage marks. If you are just looking for a couple of boards you stand there and sort. If you are doing a big project and buy in bulk you’ll often loose out…..experience states!!
