Boat building

Must of been different stuff in 60s. I remember dad and uncle playing with formula. They decided to mix way too much catalyst. A minute later we watch the paint burn off of folders paint can they were using to mix in. It was extremely hot fast. Strong fumes, I am sure it probably was not healthy work.
Sounds like polyester resin.
 
Pulled stitches from the nose - all seems quite solid. But decided I'd go ahead and fillet and glass them front and rear transoms and the sides of the nearest bulkhead. I'd do that before flipping regardless, so why not now? I started on the front knowing it would be the most difficult to get to - lots of sliding under the frame to pull up in a tight space.

Of course, that resulted in epoxy in my hair, presumably from drips on the plastic. I probably need to get a gallon of vinegar for the shop - not sure multiple acetone head scrubs would be good for my health. But a light rubbing then a sink/Go-Jo head wash seems to have gotten it all out.

Will get on the aft transom in the next few days - with both done, I'm confident the panels will stay in place for sanding and sheathing and sanding and completing the bottom.

What a job, I'm okay at overhead welding but I'm sure I'd have a mess trying to overhead epoxy.
 
Try Nair. Next time it will be easier to. Clean. More sage advice from :old:
You sound like you’re a pro at this? So you like smelling like cocoa butter or almond oil? Are you confident you picked up the men’s version and not the ladies?

Yes- in about 2000 I had an employee- Luke. He was partially bald -30s. Shaved the rest of his head. no big deal. one monday he showed up and his scalp was almost beet red. He explained what happened. A long rendition of his evening and night in fiery hell. His wife had convinced him to use Nair instead of shave. It was like a super sunburn. 20 construction workers apologizing to luke for laughing so hard that they had tears in their eyes. I know I sure did. Luke was a great sport. No way would I ever consider anything like it after his hotter than hell story. I wish I had a picture....

ps. I still have full head of hair- but it is white.
 
Finally done with epoxy and almost ready for paint. I'm having a hard time finding any decent spar varnish locally for the gunnel and a couple of other parts that I will leave natural. Everyone has helmsman but it's really not the best. I'm totally ready to have this thing out of the shop. I'm so crowded that I don't bother to sweep the floor. Hopefully we will get a nice day so I can move it outside to do a bunch of sanding. Then maybe move to the garage for painting.

Looking really nice Dave. Are you going to put oar locks on it? If so I would add a little reinforcing pad where the oar locks will mount. The other thing I'd do (which I suspect you've already figured into the design) is to make the rower seat adjustable and lockable into position. Helps to be able to adjust the seat position depending on weight distribution and body dimensions of the rower. And foot braces, definitely foot braces.

Thanks for the offer, I can get about anything online. I just waited too long now I have to wait. I found some man-o-war about 30 miles of pot holes and frost heaves away, maybe 🤔.

It will probably have 3 sets of oar locks, just one for now though. The gunnel is laminated with 2 strips of cedar, one in one out. The inwale is capped with ash and the outwale is capped with cherry. With the four laminations plus the 1/4" plywood it's 1.25" thick.

my dad had one this shape, aluminum. popular in the 60's and 70's in oregon. they called them a drift boat for fishing salmon on the rogue river in southern oregon. It was a willies, and willie was quite a character

This is a mini drift boat, I probably wouldn't take it on a stretch of river with any serious rapids. The real deal drifters are oak ribs with 1/2" or heavier plywood designed to take a beating. I will use it on milder rivers and lakes and ponds. We have many small ponds that lack a proper boat ramp, and miles of river that is almost inaccessible on foot. It feels like it weighs between 125 and 150 and will fit in the back of my pickup.

That should handle the stress from the oars. So with 3 positions for oar locks, the seat will be fixed and you'll just put the oars in the most comfortable position? Do you have your oars yet? You probably already know this but that's another variable you can use to make rowing as comfortable as you can. Oars can be got in different lengths and weights and depending on the height of the gunnels, size of the rower, type of water you'll be in, one type of oar works better than another. Or make it an eBoat and put an electronic trolling motor on it.
