Trying to see if any of you turners, woodworkers and wood collectors can possibly identify this mystery wood. I just picked up this little number and it was too nice to pass up. I picked this up from where I used to live in Manhattan called Housing Works Chelsea. Dimensions are 11.625” diameter, 4” tall and 3/16” thick at the rim. Weighs about 20.9 oz. No signature marks from what I can see.

I've seen similar from Redwood but more in line with 'Tasmanian rose myrtle', Nothofagus cunninghamii. Stunning for sure.

Those are my best guess as well Mark @Mr. Peet. I ruled out redwood as it doesn’t have that earthy smell and it is a little on the heavier side and doesn’t have the porosity. My best educated next was Australian rose Myrtle which you mentioned- thank you.

Hope you didn't pay over $10 for it. Look at all the black gaps in the inside. Part of the wood ain't there. Shoulda been discounted. Ha. Nice grab

I think it's plastic fake wood. Look at those wavy lines on the outside, no wood looks like that. Don't throw it away tho, I need a plastic bowl to set outside the front door for mail delivery. Just send it here and I'll put it to good use so your purchase wasn't all in vain.

First pic made me think of the "lacy redwood burl" pen blanks I got from Rocky B, who passed away a few months ago.

But the figure on the outside is quite different. And stunning.

is that a dipped finish over another rather bland wood

You saying I been duped all along thinking this was “wood-r-us” and now this is “toys-r-us”?

Greg Trev @vegas urban lumber- actually, that was my first thought when I picked up this piece and was negotiating that in my mind. Then I traced the grain and the curl and arrived to the conclusion that this was mother nature’s doing. If you look at the last 2 photo’s where you can see the mottled curl orientation from the inside and see that it mirrors and telegraphs through the outside of the bowl- right side about 4-5 o’clock.

That was my first thought on the wood species as I also have had this wild mottled curl on redwood (for guitar tops), but it is missing that “earthy” aroma that is very distinct with redwood and redwood is very porous. You would either have to use a sealer to level it off and then a finish film with multiple applications- if this was a guitar tops, the pores will require a pore filler to get it smooth and level before a film finish is applied. This also has some legitimate weight and redwood is light density- though I can attest by my experience there are true o.g. redwood in flame or burl format that is medium density that weighs about 3 pounds per board foot (it typically is under 2 pounds)- about in line with the average genuine mahogany.

………Rocky B rip

It's - Trev

but i've been called worse

yes i can see where some of the grain transmits through, from the original wood bowl
but i am highly skeptical that the back and forth pattern is not raked into the hydro dip

one really easy way to find out is to sand the bottom outside of the bowl

look closely at the scratches on the bottom of the bowl to see the lighter wood revealed underneath

The figuring effect is real, it has great movement, depth and chatoyance. The grain with all the aberrations mirrors the inside and the outside. At 3/16” thick in a flat sawn wild grain scenario- grain flow, grain make up and orientation would be easier to follow as oppose to a 1-2” thick piece because the core is thin at the .187” dimension, so the grain structure will easily mirror gets transposed into the other side.

The bottom end is actually worn out and that is its natural color and disposition- including the surface grain.

can you explain the cross running grain orientation at the pith, center bottom of bowl?

the swirl pattern runs completely counterintuitive swirly to the pith at center of bowl underside bottom
