Bowl Mystery Figured Wood- what is it?

can you explain the cross running grain orientation at the pith, center bottom of bowl?

the swirl pattern runs completely counterintuitive swirly to the pith at center of bowl underside bottom
There is no cross running grain orientation- they are moving in one axis, even though it is more wavy and undulating, they move from the north to south and they created these array of cascading grain as they move from east to west. If you are thinking that those pinched grain are cross grain, those are not what those are. That is grain aberration and figuring aberration. That creates a great deal of grain and figure runout. This section technically is “quartered cut”- the grain is running in one axis. The deviation on the grain and figure is related to physical, environmental and stress factors.

When I looked at it, I was thinking that pith was maybe that of a branch....but the rings do look to track to the outer edge. As for coloring, with Taz. myrtle, the dark splotches do not follow growth rings and can be very sporadic. The black however, looks to be gum pockets that do follow growth rings, maybe being old wounds. Both on the same side, years apart.

See you responded while I was typing....

Pics 6 and 7 convince me the grain is real. If you look at the edge of the bowl in #6 the pattern, to me, is what you should see if a slice was made through the material as opposed to the pattern being wrapped around the edges.
In #7 the cut to recess the foot at about 3:00 shows the pattern flows down into the depth of the bare wood as it should if it is natural.
Mother nature grows some gnarly stuff and I think this is one of them.

Paul: He said what?

Me: “please sand the bottom, i beg of you”.

Paul: What bottom?

Me: It’s no babies bottom for sure because no diapers will fit that bottom, unless we use Depends.

Paul: Depends what?

Me: That is what I was thinking, it only “depends” if the sanding will help with identification to find out the species. In effect he wants to see if what is actually there is an effect technique called “hydro dripping”.

Paul: Hydro dripping?

Me: a method effect that makes things look like another thing, but it does not look convincing to that what is supposed to replicate. He’s truly convinced that what I have, does not have real wood elements caused by Mother Nature and the grain and figure element was created by humans. It is like when people get things done where you know they are not real, because they don’t move naturally.

Paul: What?

Me: I really can’t discuss that here, this is a family forum.

Me: There is an elder in the forum that might actually benefit from such dipping effect.

Paul: Elder?

Me: Yes, Elder Mike.

Paul: Which Mike?

Me: That is a toss up. Whoever respond to this post first, is the real “Slim Shady”.

Paul: Well tell that Greg, that I am the only one that can request for such sanding to help identify the species. We don’t ID effects in here.

Me: He does not like being called Greg- he prefers Trev. Please refer to him as the artist Trev, formerly and mistakenly known as Greg.

I changed the settings and should be available at 6 pm. I should push the schedule for later for Trev.

Halloween as in "trick or treat" is months gone by and months away. but maybe by then, big city "slickers" will see their way clear to proving they haven't lost their minds

reminds me of a wood called "snake oil"
