Can crazy wood be used for box lids?

I think your box looks great! Like most people, you're your own toughest critic because you know where the mistakes are. I'm sorry about the "finish the inside first" problems. I've never had the sides cup like you did and I always finish the inside first because it's easier to sand flat pieces and not deal with tight inside corners.

That's interesting about the shellac staying tacky too. What did you make your shellac with? It might have a little water in it. I use Everclear to make shellac. But I haven't put it on with a brush either. I use a little pad made from well washed linen with a wad of cheese cloth inside and French polish my guitar that way.
I used kleen strip denatured etoh or whatever you get at Walmart. It says it is specifically for shellac, but I wonder... I was going to get some of the Everclear to see if that would fix the issue, but I just got on my husband's case last week about buying too much booze 😆

I thought you could glue anything to plywood and everything would behave 😭 Does grain orientation matter on ply?
Obviously, I thought the same and so did person with checker board. I think his is right after mine cupped, a day or so later, bad enough to not do it again. Both sides work.

A little late on this. In my opinion everclear is the best for shellac. It has very few impurities.
I'm glad you said something 😊 So I ended up switching to everclear and it didn't help. The shellac flakes were the problem!

I bought some inexpensive flakes online and im not sure if they we're really old or what the problem was with them. They were kind of dull-looking. I then got a sampler pack from shellac.net and they work perfectly. The second batch of flakes I got were shiny and translucent. Even thickly applied layers dry quickly.

Fresh shellac combined with the mineral oil + mineral spirits tip from "Foolproof Wood Finishing" by Teri Masachi allowed me to finally complete a successful shellac finish.

I'm a fan of using Everclear to mix shellac as well. Most of the pieces that I make get at least a couple of coats of shellac first before sanding smooth and the final finish.
