Willow is soft. Spalted willow is like chocolate, touch it and it melts.
I'm ashamed to say I just got mine mailed today, it will arrive on Saturday.

Don't sweat it, mine just went out yesterday. Scheduled for Friday arrival.
Mine went out Thursday - supposed to arrive soon.
Mike @Mike Hill , the ornament you made and sent me arrived this morning. Wow, double wow.
My wife and I truly couldn’t be happier and this ornament will take a special place among favorites. The personal note you included with this hand carved Santa had a bit of history only long term WB’ers would appreciate, influencing your choices. Naturally, it was packed with care and padded with some top shelf WB peanuts.

What a great ornament! A type I've not seen before, but it's really beautiful in its apparent simplicity and highlights the woods.

Very nice Frank, that is a good looking snowman. I'm really impressed you made it out of weeping willow, let alone spalted. I've tried several times to make stuff off our WW and have always just given up.

I've never tried carving. Some people "see the face" and carve until everyone else can see it. It just looks like wood to me, no faces.

Amazingly, my dad did a little carving in retirement. He really enjoyed it but I never knew where it came from. He did encourage an uncle of mine and he became a wonderful bird carver and painter.I've never tried carving. Some people "see the face" and carve until everyone else can see it. I heard it a bit differently Jonathon, I heard it as you carve away everything but the figure. Bit same thing, I just had a pile of whiling shreds at my feet. I never saw the creature.
Well kinda-did not have a pattern, but wanted it to be a redneck santa - but somehow, it turned into a lonely santa knife-carved by a smelly curmudgeon of a redneck!

Here is my unofficial, unauthorized, and unsanctioned entry. My exchange partner, in his 1st or 2nd post on WB, stated that he loved pistachios, so voila, I was gonna do an ornament either out of pistachio wood or using pistachio shells. Well, I could not find pistachio wood in the size I wanted, so I opted for the shells, but ran out of time to do it and the other ornament. So, I finally got around to it, but changed to a WB ornament for the WB family. An ornament highlighting our own special WB elves - all nine of them! No wood was harmed in this juvenile, senseless, frivolous, brown-nosing act!
