Here are photos of a board of wormy American Chestnut that would be great for box calls. The entire five ft board is quarter-sawn.
If anyone is interested in a 18 inch by 4 inch blank for you to re-saw for the box call, the price is $10 per blank plus actual shipping. The board is ⅞ thick.

Sooo.... you’re going to cut a 60” board into 3 18” sections and sell each section for $10.00 and have 6” left over?

If I offered to buy the whole 5” board, would you cut into 4 x 15” sections instead? (My bases are 6 1/2” and my paddles are 8 1/2”)

What would this run me to ship to 39042?

Hey Ken,

American Chestnut is so precious I never have anything left over. All small pieces go into crafts like these that I sell on Etsy. The only leftover chestnut in my shop is sawdust. I'll post photos tomorrow of the entire board. This one is not as nice as the other one shown above. You may want only the 4" by 15" sections out of it. The only reason I offered 18 inch sections was from a previous exchange we had. If you can use 15 inch, great. Leaves more for my crafts.

Ken, here are photos of the entire board. It's rough but is typical of the way we find chestnut boards. The left edge in the first photo is hand-hewn. This is from a very old beam. At best, I can get a 5.5 inch wide board. It's much more efficient for you if I sell you only the parts you can use. A 15 inch piece 4 inch wide and about 1 inch thick is $8.00. That should make a box call.
As said, this is quarter sawn with a near perfect 90 deg growth ring angle.

Ok, I see what you mean. The middle of the board doesn’t look like what I’d want for my boxes. But the two lengths from either end look great. If I could get the 15” pieces from each end, I would be very happy with them.

@Ken Martin
Now we're on the same page. Since I can use the rest of the board in my crafts, everyone wins. Most of this old wood looks like this. I would too if I was almost 200 years old. I do have other chestnut boards but haven't had a chance to pull them out. Maybe this week. I'll cut the sections you indicated and we'll look at them again.

Some bad news. I cut the board this morning and found significant worm damage inside that I couldn't see from the outside. I don't think this board will work for you. I'm going up to my storage barn and find some more and will PM you if I can find a good piece. Sorry about that but I'll keep trying.

Well, that’s disappointing! Thanks for being honest about it, though. Guess it just wasn’t meant to be. I’ve got lots of time, so just keep putting good stuff up and I’ll be watching.

Got the package today!

Awesome, almost spiritual just holding it.

Thanks Larry for the "filler" items

Glad you like it, Wayne. I feel the same way about this old recovered chestnut. Since the only way you can find it now is in old buildings, it's getting more and more scarce as the years go on. Almost all the chestnut trees in PA were dead by 1930. The blight left very few trees alive. Thirty years ago, I could buy hand-hewn beams and boards for $3 a bf. Today, if you can find it, it's $16 a BF. Fortunately, I did buy a lot many years ago. It's a beautiful but utilitarian wood.

Enjoy!
