A discussion about this started in the Black Walnut Crotch thread I posted earlier this week. I am moving that discussion into its own thread (here) so others can easily participate and not have to go to an ended thread and search for it.

Ken Martrin asked about Am Chestnut for use in making turkey box calls. You can see the discussion at

He and I are making a deal on the 28" long chestnut board but I do have other boards and other woods that should make great turkey box calls. You will see them starting today. The three photos shown below are of Sitka spruce. It is quarter-sawn and it is well known for it's tonal qualities in acoustic guitars.

The price for these two boards is $18 plus shipping from 19350.

If anybody is waiting on me, I’m going to pass on these boards. I’m going to have to read up on using spruce in my boxcalls. I’m more interested in the chestnut and walnut crotch for now.

@Bigdrowdy1 @Ken Martin

Here is another rare offer. I recently found in my stash some great wormy American Chestnut boards with crotch figure on one end. The board shown below is 11" wide and 4/4 thickness. It has been planed by someone, not me, so you're seeing it straight out of my barn. These are very rare, in fact, the only ones I've ever seen. The guys hewing the ancient logs didn't want to fool with limb crotches so they were left to rot. If the farmer had access to a water-powered saw mill, the crotches were occasionally cut but even then they didn't like them because of the handwork of cutting the mortises and tenons in the beams. And the crotches were always at the end of the beams that had to be worked by hand. These are relics and as best as I can tell, they were never used. There are no nail holes. They were found in a barn in Chester County. I'd like to sell the top 25 inches on this board which is the entire crotch. That should make around 15 pot calls or more if you make 3" diameter pots. The total cost would be $45 plus shipping. If you only want 12 inchs of the board, the cost is $25 plus shipping.

The photos below show the crotch board inside the shop and then in full sunshine.
