Let's see if I can set up a trade correctly!

Here are two offers, one comprising a carving/turning block of green Catalpa 8" x 7-3/4" x 5-1/4". This block has end grain coated in latex paint. It looks thin in the photos, painted the previous day, and I added another coat after photographing it. No pith, no cracking visible.

Catalpa is an excellent carving wood. Here is a photo of a 'Green Man' I carved into a Catalpa stump many years ago, and gave away as a gift. The wood holds detail well:

These offers will ship for $11.35 in a medium Flat Rate Box.

The carving/turning block: 8" x 7-3/4" x 5-1/4"

The Larger Block Is Spoken For! 3-26-12

Catalpa Boards spoken for by PaulHinds/ traded for veneer 4/27/12

The second is a pair of two green Catalpa boards about 11" x 5-1/2" x 1-3/4" each, end-coated with two layers latex paint. No pith. They'd be great for carving a design in box tops, or turning shallow bowls or between centers:

What I'm really hoping for is something fine-grained and dense, in as dark a wood as I can get, for finials and lids on turned vessels. Some African Blackwood would be ideal for that purpose, but let me know what you have I can use for finials and lids of vessels, at least 8/4 and 12" or more long. But I'm open to ideas. Any takers?

RE: Catalpa for Trade

Those are fine blocks of catalpa, It turns easy but boy does it stink! Smells like wet dog LOL. Do you find it to be a little stinky barb? or was it just the pieces I had? But it sure is pretty and has a fabulous cathedral grain, and those pieces you show look like crotch wood. Should make for some fine bowls or vesels.

Hi Greg- All I've done so far is chainsaw and bandsaw it. It had an odor, but not that bad! Maybe a dog pissed on your tree all the time? ;-)
And no, no crotch wood pictured here. These stumps were so big, these samples are all from straight-grained lower trunks, a good 12" away from the pith. I'm trying to figure out how to get through the crotch pieces with my 15" electric chainsaw!

Just a thought about lids, collars, and finials… If you're up to a little dye work, holly is great for turning finials, and pear is not too far behind. Leather dye will make it blacker than ebony with a fair bit of money left in your pocket. I suspect persimmon would be a good choice as well, but I've yet to turn any.

I just got some catalpa that I sourced locally, so i'm not up for a trade right now. It is pretty stuff, and I sort of enjoyed the smell… Of course, I grew up with dogs so…

BTW, great job on the carving!

Hello Roy,
Well, I've never had an Amboyna Burl, so I couldn't turn that down! What size do you have available you could trade? And King Wood... well, maybe, if you have pictures of both?

Hi David, I understand the dying idea, but to me, holly is so valuable I wouldn't use it for that. I could ebonize cherry, but so many friends have talked about Blackwood I'm kind of anxious to get some and try turning it for finials. I have yet to obtain pear, too. I think WoodBarter is going to be quite the experience! Thanks for the tips. Oh, and the compliment on my carving!

Barb,

As a member, and as someone who has traded with Roy extensively I can vouch for him. You won't get hurt trading with Roy. :nea:

You'll usually end up feeling a bit guilty, looking around wondering what else you can stick in the mail after you get his box/es.

In fact many if not most of our members are that way. Not all of them unfortunately, but Roy is definitely an exemplary stand-out trader

:good2:

Edit 21:38

By the way you're sitting on a bunch of very nice Catalpa you can turn that into a nice little xylotheque and trade for plenty of turning wood to boot.

2) Koa some figure Measurements are 12" x 3 3/4" x 2" it is Dry an no checks

King Wood is in another shop I have to get Pictures if it tomorrow unless one of theses work for ya If they dont dont worry
Roy

Oh Roy, those are beauties. As Kevin says, I do feel a bit guilty, but if you have Too Much of those, I'd sure love to help you divest yourself of some. It's hard for a gal with so little good wood, but of the two, I guess I'd have to choose the Amboyna Burl. Unless..... you'd like me to load a 12 x 12 box with Catalpa and you send both? I have pieces I can cut to fit, although that wide flat one I want to keep for a platter.
What do you think? If only one, I have to say the Amboyna, and Thanks.

Ha! You have Character, don't you? That's very generous of you. And yes, I'll PM you the address, and I'll need yours, too. I'll try to get it off tomorrow, but my mother is having surgery Wed am (she's 91 and requires a bit of attention) so I'll let you know if I cannot make it to the post office for a few days. I'll try, though. I'm very excited. Thank you for not being Too Much of a hoarder, and sharing some of that beautiful wood.

You bet I'll trade a box of FBE with you. I'm kind of far behind on orders right now though so I've had to curtail my trading on the forum until I can get caught up on my paying customers. I won't forget you though and from the looks of it you won't be running out of it anytime soon - is that right?

I'm glad you're liking it here we're thrilled to have you, and thanks for inviting Barabra Gill.

What the heck how much time can it take! Barb let's trade a LFRB - cool? What I would like, is a 12" square x 5.5" thick. I intend to resaw 2.5" off for a small shallow bowl blank and have three 4" peppermill blanks left.

How would you like your FBE served up? After you answer that let's trade PMs I'll send my address right now. No hurry on getting my box out.

Great, Kevin. I'll have to cut into a stump to get a full 12" square piece again, so give me a coupla' days. Mother (91) going in for surgery tomorrow am. But I'll do it soon.
As for the FBE, I'm not sure. I'm thinking I'd like a piece for an 8" vase, and another to fill the box? I'll be using it for anything from box tops to pens, I guess. Um, I don't mean to be picky, and would appreciate any of it, but, do you have pieces without those tiny bug holes in? Clear pieces? Sorry, but, well, you know. I can't see doing a fancy pen with bug holes in it. :scratch_one-s_head:

Barb don't sweat the 12" square seriously. Just get a piece or pieces large enough to do some pepper mills. My wife turns bottle stoppers and pens so any filler will be used.

As to FBE with no bug holes . . . . . . that's a tall order. I'll look though. It's definitely a personal preference but I think the borer holes not only give it character but it's a great coversation opener. Most people when they first see it will ask "Are those worm holes?" Or they'll say "What are these holes?" Then you turn that into a good thing by describing how the borers cause that beautiful flame and how the tree tries to defend against the attack - the immune system of the tree "starts making billions of more red blood cells to survive..." well you get the picture. Making some analogies are permitted. I'll try to find some unholy FBE for you though.

Like I said no hurry on this - take care of mom the wood ain't going anywhere. Hope she comes through this with flying colors.
