I have some veneer that I use for contrast wood in my bowls. It's standard thickness (1/42" nominal) but works REALLY well as contrast woods. I've got pretty much any color that veneer comes in and as much of it as you are likely to need, although none of it is longer than 12.5". You can see my stock here:

SO ... whatdaya think? Do I have enough veneer?

I used to buy and sell the stuff but now I only sell but would also be happy to trade for wood.

WOW Paul, I thought I was addicted:dash2:- you have got it bad. Looks to me like you have a lot of bowls in your future.:yipee:

Well, I figure if I glue big chunks of the veneer together to form bowl blanks, and turn one bowl a week, I could get rid of the whole batch in about 37 years.

You might not even need to glue it up. Penn State Industries now has a system for metal spinning (Metal Spinning Link) so perhaps you could soak the veneer and pretend it's metal.

OK, maybe not - but you'd get a lot more bowls out of all that veneer :)

The better stuff that I have is at

jewelry box veneer: www.hobbithouseinc.com/store/

I sold a ton of it back when I was doing it on ebay (I still am but very lightly/intermittently)

You weren't kidding!

I haven't done much with veneer but have been wanting to so some larger veneer panels. Too bad you are dealing with all shorts.

I might be able to use some shorts, but would be looking for super figured woods like waterfall bubinga, quilted maple, and burls if you have any.

So much awesome veneer on your site there. I honestly hadn't heard of a good half of those species of wood. Your wood ID site it by far the best on the web, really helpful for new guys like me. :good:

Got my veneer today including the above unknown burl veneer plus several sheets of maple! I'm looking forward to my next project where I get to use this piece! Thanks a lot!

Do you have any ugly light colored stuff?

Well, of course you don't, but let me explain.

I have a vacuum system on the way and I'd like to try my hand at dyeing some in different colors, including colors not necessarily found in nature, for use in Celtic crosses for pens and other turnings.

So I'd feel real bad at using something that's got a nice grain or figure since none of that would be seen.

That's why I'm asking for 'ugly' but would settle for 'plain' :)

Thanks.

Oh, I'm sure I could find something that some folks would find ugly. At any rate, I can certainly find plenty of plain. Do you want to trade or buy?

Not sure I have anything you'd like to trade for. I do have some cocobolo turning stock (I'll have to check the size) and I have some 1x1x12 lignum vitae that turns yellow and then gets very green.

I also have some ash logs that are about 5 or 6" in diameter that I could turn into bowl blanks.

Otherwise I'll be looking at purchasing :)

I'd be happy to get lignum vitae since I've only ever had a few small pieces to take pics of for the site and a few more would be nice. What sizes do you have and how much veneer do you want?

I'll check to see how much I have left when I get home tonight and let you know. After you know what I have available then you can let me know how much veneer that will get me and I'll know whether I need to throw some cash in the deal.

I don't have solid plans for specific projects - it's something I want to try out and that makes it difficult to give you an exact amount of veneer.

Not trying to be difficult, just trying to do some new stuff.

Thanks.

All I have is relatively small turning stock. I have 10 of these I can send your way if you want them. I can also get more, at least for a while.

These are 1x1x12. They turn really yellow, smell great while doing so, and then they turn really green if you give them exposure.

Here's a pen I turned from one of the other pieces. This is sort of between the yellow and green phases:

That certainly suits me. Do you want me to work up an estimate for how much veneer that will get you?

I'm assuming plain veneer, as you said, and you want to stain it so you won't want any really dark veneer, right? All my stuff is 12" long. Do you have any width requirements?

Do you want any grain patterns that will stand out after you stain the veneer? I have some quartersawn Douglas fir that would probably look neat stained, since the early growth stripes will suck up the stain and the late growth stripes will likely reject most of it (although I'm not positive about that).

Yes, please do.

I guess that will depend on how much we'll be trading. If there's sufficient then some walnut (or something dark) would be nice for doing some natural light/dark stuff - but it's not a requirement.

The only width requirement would be, at most, 4". Mostly this will be for pens, calls, stoppers, and grinders so they don't have to be real wide.

Sure, why not? As long as I'm experimenting it's worth trying different things out.

I'll be glad to post results back on the site as well.

Thanks.

Here's the batch. It's just over 3 lbs so about 50 sqft. Ought to make at least 3 or 4 pens

[attachment=3486]

I may have gotten carried away w/ putting in variety since I now realize that I had intended for there to be more light-colored stuff. Want me to swap some of it for lighter colors?

If you wouldn't mind, I'd appreciate it. No more than 5 or 6 pieces of it though.

I'll PM you my address and such.
