Hello! I’m fairly new to wood carving and read about this site on another forum while trying to source some soft woods.

I’m fairly handy and grew up learning to wood work with my dad who owned a small business and is an accomplished oil painter.

My recent interest is carving duck decoys which I started a few months ago, and I’ve been trying to find some basswood, white pine, tupelo and other soft woods ideal for this style of carving. I’ve been lucky to get some recently milled white pine but it still needs a couple years to dry out.

Anyways, I started carving some miniature ducks to start out and I’ve now moved on to full size (pictures attached).

Looking forward to meeting some folks and hopefully making a few connections to fuel my hobby!

WELCOME! From Michigan. :welcome2:
Awesome work. And I used to have a triumph also.

Welcome from Bulverde, TEXAS! Nice to see your great looking ducks! Chuck

Welcome from North Texas!

There are several members here from your general area. It's always fun to put a face with a name.

I get to Richmond 7-8 times a year for work reasons.

The ducks look nice!

Thanks! No, I haven’t heard of that. Assuming you’re not talking about freshly cut wood.
I am talking about freshly cut wood. It is much easier to carve. This means that you can expand your carving wood horizons to fruit woods and other harder timbers. Do the rough out while green. Let it dry and do the finishing cuts.

Welcome from SE NC! If you haven't already found duckboats.net, you might check out that forum, too. Primary focus is building wooden duck boats, but we have a number of very talented decoy makers and a dedicated subforum - and like this forum, the folks there are very helpful.

Thanks - I think I’ve come across that site before but I’ll have to revisit. I appreciate the info!
