My stainless grill set is on its way out, with the spatula handle about to fall off and spot rust forming in crevasses. I would love to get a new set and make the handles from wood. I would prefer a full tang design, but I would consider an option that involved turning the handles with mechanical or epoxy anchored shaft. My biggest concern is that the steel is high quality and stainless. At a minimum I need a spatula and tongs, but a kit with a fork and/or basting brush would be fine too.

Can anyone recommend a good prefab kit for such a project? Or does anyone know of any metalworkers who make these utensils?

You can make the spatula and tongs purely from wood. They are good beginner carving projects too if you ever enter that craft. Also because of their simplicity they are simple to replace, and can be made from just about any food safe wood.

I know that greenhavenforge makes cooking utensils and such. He does custom orders though and it might be expensive considering they are hand forged.
They will last a lifetime though.

Rockler has a kit with a basting brush.
Penn State has a kit without the basting brush.
Yeah, I have found a few. I'm mostly looking for feedback on those existing kits or recommendations on a custom made kit. I have found Rockler kits to be good quality in the past, but you never know. When it comes to stainless, a lot of companies use inferior stainless steel material standards or use some other inferior alloy and just call it stainless. Rust is my concern, especially with a potentially water soaked wood being butted up against it.

Ive made solid wood spatulas and tongs already but for kitchen use. For grilling, I want the toughness of steel.

It looks like that guy is out of business? Basically everything in his store is listed as being sold out.
He has a waitlist. Send an E-mail his way. The waitlist is mainly for his axes and knives.
