How's your day been?

Found out that my f250 requires aa special key like a wheel lock to lower the spare tire down from underneath the truck. Of course I bought the truck used and didn't get the key. I'm still exploring options as to how to get it down without cutting the cable, which is what the dealer wanted to do. Gonna check with a few friends that have ford pick ups and see if any of their keys match.
Boy, that is frustrating!

Well 3 ford dealerships and no love. Supposedly there are 12 to 19 different keys for the lock, they where made by mcgard wheel locks, the look like a wheel lock. The stealerships solution was to cut the cable and then replace the whole winch assembly for several hundred dollars, uh no. Ill ask a couple of friends to see theirs and maybe one might be a match. If not I have plan b and c to try and get the spare down. Once I get the spare down I can remove the lock and just use it as ford has done the last 50 years!
Grrrr.

What does this lock look like? I just use my ignition key to unlock the lock in the bumper to access the jack tube.

It looks like a wheel lock, but it's deep inside at the back of the tube. You reach it with the jack crank handle. The key is supposed to go on the end of the crank handle, you insert it into the tube to engage it and then crank the handle.

This is what the whole assembly looks like. The lock is on the left. The key is in the middle, and the jack crank is on the right.

Several folks imply that you may be able to drop that by using an extension or 5, ( got to reach past the 20" mark) with a 15 mm/ nine sixteenth bolt biter type extractor socket tapped firmly over the key shaft and reversed to lower the tire. Once down, the tube assembly can be disassembled and the key removed allowing you to use the ⅜ drive rod without any socket at all to work the winch without any other adaptation.

or weld a head on that lock that a socket can fit and appropriate socket welded on a jack crank rod

We'll see! First official day of being 70 and being unemployed. Weird feeling not going into the office.
Browsing websites, hoarding wood, cooking brisket, and generally lazing around just isn't the same when you aren't in the office.

Well I still dont have my parts back from the paint guy, he got sick. A bummer but it is what it is. He assures me I'll have them by the weekend, we'll see.........
But in the meantime I scored a used russel day long seat for the silverwing. These seats are very expensive and it's rare to find a used one, especially for a scooter.
