Yesterday I got a miscellaneous box of turning blanks from our turning club. Most of them were marked but some weren't. Naturally I don't have the contact info for the person that put it up for auction.

My main questions are for 1 through 3. #1 is lightweight and dense. #2 is dense and heavier. #3 is the heaviest. I'm assuming that #4 is cocobolo (dense and heavy) and #5 is purple heart, but wanted to be sure. Thanks!

Congrats on the box of wood! Believe you are correct on #4, and unmistakably #5 is Purpleheart. The others I’m not sure about. Chuck

1 looks like Bubinga and 2 like black mesquite but that is based on color and face grain.

If you got them from your club, they should be able to help you. Secondly, check to see if any match one of the labeled ones. People often skip labeling a second piece assuming the other person will see it matches one labeled. Good luck.

That is a great point you mention- labeling, I forgot to note that #1 is marked with a '12' or a 'B' so bubinga makes sense. #2 starts with a 'C', #3 ends with an 'N' (probably pecan since they included a partially turned pecan bowl).

I think it might be from a gentleman that does custom cabinets and furniture. He donates a ton of offcuts for the club, and is an all-around good guy.

I think you are correct. It does have a faint pleasant smell when I scrape it.
I am pretty sure that #5 is D. cearensis or Brazilian kingwood. The face grain isn’t right for camatillo to my eyes. Camatillo is very distinctive in grain pattern but yours is much much more like Brazilian kingwood.

I’d agree with others that 1 looks to me like bubinga. 4 could be cocobolo but it’s hard to tell. 2 and 3 I am not sure on. Could be mesquite and pecan but again not sure

I disagree b. Kingwood below. Wrong color

Mexican and Brazilian kingwood are the 2 dallbergia kingwoods I have had in hand. I did not realize there were more.

I don’t really feel you can identify kingwood based on just colour. Even Brazilian can vary. I’ve seen some the colour of yours there, some more pink, some quite red and some a bit more violet purple fresh sanded. I bought a log of old stock years ago which is almost identical to the picture in the original photo. I go more by grain structure than anything else. Cearensis has more open and thicker stripes. Plus the face grain is totally different to camatillo. Camatillo has those super tight stripes.. I know it but I’m struggling to describe in words.
This is the purple Brazilian kingwood (confirmed cearensis) I have, which to me matches the above sample

Bought my kingwood at Bolhke. They had 4000 bd ft. All of it was close to my example.
Hopefully poster will get ID.
