Great comments Mike and Jerry, thanks. I kind of agree with you Mike that my blades might not be sharp. The guy who sold me the saw included them in the sale but I recall him saying he didn't know how old they were of whether they were any good. I suspect he mostly used the saw to cut small thin parts and stuff - he was a guitar builder. My widest blade I think is 4 tpi. I think I'll invest in a new 3tpi as you suggest so I can do some resawing. I have some boards that I want to use for boxes but they're at least an inch thick.

You will be happy. Get saw tuned to that blade. It will serve you well. Save money... buy 2.
 
I've always "twanged" my blade like a guitar string - a dead sound and it isnt tight enough. Tighten just until you get a resonant sound.

Your guides shouldn't touch the blade at rest, but should be danged close.

In my experience, much blade wander is due to the blade being dull, as Mike mentioned, or feeding too fast and the back of the blade riding the rear guide (and side guides having too much gap).

I have the same bandsaw and it is probably 30 years old with no major issues. I didn’t have very good luck with the cool blocks so I switched to Carter knockoff roller guides. I’ve been very happy with them. I would also recommend staying away from BIG BOX Store blades as the new ones I’ve tried are extremely dull even when new. I’m thinking I’m running Starrett brand (more expensive) But I can tell the difference in cut quality. I also think it is important to have a couple different sizes (1/8” and 3/8”) so you can cut tighter radius.
