My boxes

I want to apologize for saying what I did. I know better. Years ago when I first started making boxes a friend and I had a heated discussion about me being an artist. I have the letter he sent explaining what we discussed hanging in my shop to remind me of that. Basically it is that my opinion on my boxes does not matter. The publics opinion matters and I just need to keep my mouth shut.

No apology needed. It is this way with all artists. We make something and we see the differences of what we made compared to our vision. Others don’t have the vision. That is the big difference. Others can only tell us limited stuff like “is the shape pleasing to the eye” or if the finish is uneven.

Or, like one of my painting mentors said - she was sick and tired of statements like: "I wish I had the talent to paint like you". People just think that she just picked up a brush and started to paint great paintings. They do not see the 30+ years of painting (practice in other words) that culminated in that painting!

I just found this thread, so I got to see all of them at once and compare. Great boxes, and I appreciate you posting so we can see them.

The craftsmanship is good enough so that I don't have anything to snipe at, and I am just left with what looks best to my eye. My favorites are the ones with some drama - horse chestnut, kona, and the bumpy maple one.

Good stuff, and thank you!

Here is the latest box. I had to wait three weeks for Brusso to fill my order.
this is another Holly and Walnut box. It measures about 9”X7”x2 3/4” tall overall. Finished with Watco danish oil and buffed out with a hard wax. IMG_2951.jpeg IMG_2949.jpeg IMG_2954.jpeg IMG_2953.jpeg IMG_2953.jpeg

I am "late to the party" but .. WOW ... all of these are amazing! It always helps to start with beautiful wood, but the design and creativity is off the charts. Congrats and compliments! You make me want to turn the lathe off and go shopping for high character wood 😎

Love the holly / walnut combos. I have a pile of walnut with a few sections of holly chopped up to see just how horribly it will discolor... If it isn't too horrible, I may try a few walnut and holly projects myself.
