And another box. While trying to get my shop set up again, I found a cardboard box full of straps and corners. I wondered why the heck I had such large straps. Then I realized that I bought them to build a large chest someone wanted years ago. I decided to make a wooden box to store them in. I made it out of Horse Chestnut. It has a sliding lid that locks tight in the back groove so it wont fall out when moving it.

Excellent! First time on WB that I’ve seen Horse Chestnut used in a project. Chuck

The company I used to work for had a Horse Chestnut tree that needed to be taken down. Seeing free wood; I ask for the tree cutter to let me have a section of it. I took it to a saw mill and had it cut into slabs. I culled out the bad sections and 4 squared it. It has been stored out in the shed for so many years. I decided to try it out and I really like it. I have a couple of small boxes made from it. I will try to remember to post them for you.

I am filling a request for Horse Chestnut . What I would like to know from you is what you see as far as the colored area of the second box looks like to you. IMG_2751 - Copy.JPG I am also showing three others of the same wood

Beautiful. I haven’t seen any horse chestnut used before. It’s quite common in Vienna so I will take a look.

As far as that second box is concerned I see a bull charging into a red stream.

That bloodwood is suspiciously purple. Nice box though.
It is bloodwood. The pictures don't really show the colors very well. The body is much more yellow in person as well.
Then again; maybe you are right, One thing is that after my box making hiatus; I have no idea what some of the wood I have really is.

Aah bad lighting. The bane of all wood identifiers. If need an ID we have some very knowledgable members who could help with an ID.

Your boxes are awesome! And they are helpful examples for me since they include the live edge. I am new to box making. Most of my wood supply is figured, live cut slabs. I hate trimming off the unique characteristics of the wood, so I put it to the side and get stuck trying to figure out how to include it in a way that looks cohesive (and not just as a lid).

The maple burl box is my favorite 🙂 Did you carve the hinges for it?

The wood hinges were a first try for me. I used a box joint jig and drilled a 1/16" hole through them. I used a 1/16" brass rod and used it as a hinge pin. It worked great.
My issue with it is I haven't been able to duplicate them again. I try and try and no luck yet.

You can cast live edges (in epoxy) to make the edges square without losing the live edge.

Do you make a box every day or do you post one every day?
I post one everyday. I have about 18 or 19 boxes ready to go. The one I have in process right now should be done tomorrow. Then again; there is still time to mess it up. I am in my shop from 2 to 3 hours a day up to twelve hours depending on what I am doing.
I have a shirt I love that says Retirement Plan coffee sawdust and freedom.
