Just getting into turning mostly because I like making and using my own stuff for hunting and fishing. I pour my own jigs and plastics, tie my own jigs and flies, reload my own ammo, make my own arrows and a longbow etc. Also tanning my own fur for projects so it only felt natural to make my own game calls.

I've turned a few turkey pots so far and a couple squirrel calls. Every time I get a little better at it but I'm a perfectionist at heart so I won't be happy until they're perfect.

I've finished the turkey pots mostly with blo and then a wax paste. For the air blown calls I plan on finishing with ca to protect from the condensation on the inside. How is the best way to get a good coat on the inside of a call without messing up the id where a reed won't fit properly? I've yet to try it. Also, can you put ca over blo? I like the look blo gives but I want the protection of the ca. Thanks.

Dannie ole boy, have you made an AtlAtl yet? if so, lets see it....... You opened up this can of worms, so let's see wat chu got.

Welcome to the site James. You're probably gonna like it here. Lotta call makers, both air and pots. I only have one caution for you , There is no such thing as PERFECT in woodworking............ Nubs

Will do! Got multiple styles from complicated designs with dart rests and the simplest "forked stick" ones. I haven't made a basketmaker yet. Gonna try that one day.

I can't post pics now, because they are in the basement and I don't want to get out of bed but tomorrow I will post. I do find, that the dart is more important than the thrower. I am not good at making darts. Mainly because we don't have good dart material in Austria. In NZ we had lancewood and ToiToi which were amazing dart materials. All we got here is young Phragmites and hazel. No viburnums either.

What you got?

Here are the only pictures I've taken so far. Those were the first two pot calls before I finished them. I ended up not using the very first one. Had too many rip outs learning the tools and I didn't cut the grooves on the side in a way I care for. It's pretty obvious which is which lol. Then my first squirrel call mouth operated sounds pretty decent not perfect but has to be sucked and not blown. I should have cut the lanyard groove larger on that one but didn't ever fix it since it won't be used either. I'll try to post more later on.

Here we go.
The leftmost one is a normal stick with a pointy end style made of glossy buckthorn.
The middle one was inspired by Thunderbird Atlatl’s otsiningo style. The right one by their Tioga style.

Those should be enough pics. I have more but those were the fun ones. The dart rests are not traditional not are the tied on points. As in the Tioga I have an antler tip instead. That is traditional.

Are you going to try and make one?

Welcome from SE NC!

Yes, you can CA over BLO - just make sure it is fully dry/cured. I have CA'd successfully over tung oil (my preference), but I waited a month or so to ensure complete cure (BLO should cure faster than pure tung).

There isn't an easy way to fully CA the inside - for duck calls, I use a wooden q-tip style applicator for running the CA into the ends of the calls. But the real reason for doing this is just aesthetics, to continue the finish look. Unless you're using a wood that really sucks up the moisture and that is on the high end of the movement scale, I don't think you'll have any problems.

Nope. Don't need to "try and make one" as I stopped making that kind of stuff about the time I started woodturning in '2009.

I'll get some pictures and then start my own thread rather than hijack James' intro. It will be in the Carving forum as I had to do some shaping with a rock on most of them. I can only find seven of them that I made and a couple by other people I knew. ........... Nubs

James, you indicate you make your own arrows. What do you use for points? .............

That was directed at the audience in general. I should have probably made a separate thread as you suggested for the same reasons. Mine were carved too. I was thinking about using a router and a template but I was more confident in my carving skills than my routing skills. Also, it doesn’t need to be machined perfect but it isn’t allowed to be too heavy. Especially at the head. I can’t wait to see yours.
