Welcome from Crossville TN. I have a small (very small) sawmill. I have sawn most of the woods you are in love with in the last 4 years. I have a short stack of black locust slabbed in my yard right now. I mean my yard not a sawmill yard...

I have been studying the history of Black Locust and why it was so severely harvested and not replanted. I don’t know if it’s true, what I read but it seems like a good plausible explanation. And the wood is an amazing wood in my opinion! As is honey locust! Thanks for the warm welcome!

Welcome from Illinois. I work a lot with black locust as I've got a nearly unlimited supply about 100 yards from my back door. The same with honey locust. Never done any flat work with it though, all on the lathe.

It was mainly harvested for fence posts as Osage orange became rarer. It works similarly. Extreme rot resistance and good hardness with silica. All of that makes it an extremely durable outdoor wood.

I'm looking forward to following along on your bench build and am contemplating doing the same in the next year or so. Please do share the journey with us.

I've spent a lot of time in your state over the last few years, mostly in the Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, High Point, & Charlotte areas. I just got back a few minutes ago. It's really nice at this time of year.

Welcome. Lots of info and wood here. I love making benches. Like the large M&T joinery. 2 sons have one i built. My build is in classroom. Mine followed no frmal style, just Mike's bench. Hard maple top, walnut frame, and big leaf maple accents. 350 lbs empty. Not portable.
