Just saw I guy on another thread, stated he gets $135 for a 10" x 10" x 2.5" blank of spalted Maple. Is that realistic? I don't have anything to sell here or elsewhere; I'm just trying to get an idea on pricing. I've seen prices on spectacular pieces here that are more reasonable.

To me, it’s supply and demand. You might find a buyer depending on how desperate they are for spalted Maple.

To give you a reasonable “market rate” for turning wood, you can use the WB “search feature” to find comparable past sales, which are basically private party sales.

Off hand, I think I would sell the piece you are talking about for somewhere between $30-$40. It would depend on a few factors.

It all depends on the market. Where you're selling, who you're selling to, type of wood and want of the purchaser. I take a lot of local wood (to me) when I go to SWAT. I figure my cost of the wood and all my time and expenses into the price. Could I sell it here locally for that....heck no. Buyers here can go around to about anywhere and find a few pieces to turn. Now some stuff I get is just not readily available but not impossible. That price of the spalted maple is extremely high IMO but they may have found a buyer that cost is not an issue. If I had it, depending on the amount of spalt, $30-$40 would probably be what I'd price. Remember, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay

The guy from the other forum did say this was what he got only during the holiday season and very small amount of what he gets. So yes, basically what all of you had said.

Thanks

P.S. I though I'm going to have to mine my log piles for "HVSM" lol.

Seems way overpriced to me. But the real expert is @Mike1950
Non figured spalted maple$10$15 a bd ft. And that is 250 ci. 2 bd ft 288 ci so not 2 bd ft. So over $70 bd ft. Ha, but obviously since it sold it is worth what someone paid for it. But I bet seller sells almost nothing.

Just to add to what Eric said = it could also be a really special piece. Spalted maple could be really poor quality, with big holes and punky spots and what not and not hardly be worth trying to make something from. But maybe he found a section that is really solid, no bug holes, lots of figure, so without a photo it's kind of hard to 100% say it's too high.

He did say these were quality pieces of Red Maple that were 100% solid. Still though. I'd cut and paste his photos, but I think there would be a source (forum) id attached and I don't know if referencing other forums here is allowed.

I thought as all of you, it was high, but wasn't quite sure. It was Red Maple he said. If it was like the beautiful, gorgeous pieces that you post, then maybe, yes it would be worth it. Someday I'll be buying a blank of your quilted BLM.

I would like to see a picture.
Spalted maple is not rare. Great spalted maple is not rare. 15-$20 a bd ft would be decent retail price dry. Most people should not buy green spalt. Sometimes once water leaves it is worthless.
I always advise people to do the math. 10x10x2.5 means nothing to me but 10x10x2.5=250÷144 gives you bd ft, this means something. The mun ebony I had , was sold for less than that maple. If all you have is weight you can still figure board ft. 10 lbs dry ÷3=3.3333 bd ft. Wet 10÷×4=2.5 bd ft. Spalt weight might be higher wet and considerably lighter if dry. Not exact but very close

He didn't mention if it was dry either.
