Projects I don't post (normally)

Another project I've been working on for a bit.
No storage at all on my brother's roadster project. He asked if I could make an old time trunk type box he could hang off the back bumper.
About 32 X 16 X 12. I used hardware from an old rotten trunk.

Could you post pics when installed ?

Very cool. Since that's going to be outside and exposed to elements and dirt etc, what finish(es) did you use?

Painted with automotive paint so should be good against the elements. He just sent me an install shot. Mounted high to clear the gas tank fill. Need to make running boards now. Coming along, should be ready by June 1.

Tried some practice finial work with a piece of Koa. Was finishing as I went along. Had the taper down to 1/16 thick. Did great till I tried abrasive paste. Squeezed a bit to hard and it broke right off..
Might try fixing it.

Sawdust and epoxy?
It's broken completely off. I balanced it back for the photo.
Was thinking drill a small hole in the ball and reglue tapered part in. Then turn taper and finish base.
Worse comes to worse it goes in the burn barrel. Was fun practice anyway!

That's what I'd do. Cut the broken section off at the ball and drill a small hole 1/4" into the ball (whatever diameter drill fits best). Either cut if off or just turn the tapered end leaving a round mortise the same diameter as the hole you drilled into the ball. Then just glue them together, no one will be the wiser.

It was looking good - your fix idea might work. One option would be to drill a hole in the ball and glue in a piece of toothpick. Then start the lower piece with something like a saucer (it would balance the one on the "good side" of the ball) which would give you enough mass to drill another hole and glue the toothpick in. A miniature loose tenon, if you get my drift.

My experience attempting thin finials taught me the most important thing is that the wood must have straight grain aligned perfectly along the axis - the slightest angle creates a weak area of short grain.

Okay, please no offense meant, we are a family. But let’s address the elephant in the room: YOU’RE PRACTICING WITH KOA????

I picked up a box of scraps from Kalia. Wasn't big enough for anything else.
If it came out how I imagined it was going into my next project. That's why I will attempt to fix it.

Made a thank you dish for my pain doctor. Unknown wood from the stack. Need to visit him soon for another round.
Still needs finish. Not sure what I will use.
