I would have thought Tulip poplar, being Catalpa is more grainy, being ring porous to semi-ring porous.

I would use black epoxy, glue the broken piece back on. Then sand. Then get out the burning iron and make some more black lines.
 
Guess it's been awhile since I just played in the shop!
African blackwood globe with purple heart finials. Tried a more simplistic look. 2 round by 4 long. Smaller than it looks in the pic.

About 4 inch. Made from mappa I got from @Buga.

Another project I've been working on for a bit.
No storage at all on my brother's roadster project. He asked if I could make an old time trunk type box he could hang off the back bumper.
About 32 X 16 X 12. I used hardware from an old rotten trunk.
