How sure are you it's Walnut? That much red I'd think it was Butternut for sure. Sure is purdy regardless, gonna light up like a neon sign with a good finish on it.

Well,.....Butternut should not have any red, salmon or pinks in the wood. The only time those colors should happen is if it is a hybrid. Most of the Butternut lumber on the east coast commercial market is hybridized with Japanese walnut. This mix was heavily pushed since the 1880's and reintroduced at a world's fair in the 1930's. Purdue has put out some great literature on the subject.

Here is a picture of the chunk from which this blank came right afyer cutting it. This blank is on the right. The left side is darker, but has some nice red "stripes" - it is now a call in the finishing stage.



This is 1 of 2 chunks of curly Claro I bought from someone here many years ago - maybe one of the old fundraising auctions? Maybe someone here will recognize it. Anyway, glad I have another!

I 've had little exposure to Butternut, hybrid or not. Connor was given a few pieces that the endgrain was a match to Black Walnut, smelled very much like it, but the color was nothing like Black Walnut. Wasn't aware of any hybrids till now.

Here's something random that got passed down to me by a family member - a system of writing for the blind called Moon's Embossed that lost out to Braille (though apparently still used by some who lost sight after learning to read because of correspondence to sight reading).

This huge thing is Mark from the Gospels. I translated parts, and it corresponds pretty tightly to the Revised Standard Bible. If you look at the top line of the third pic, it says "The Gospel According to St Mark". Note the return lines at start and end - they're to help a reader track reading left to right, returning right to left, returning left to right, etc.

Kind of cool.

Also no idea what to do with it.

Red-headed rock agama? Sub-Saharan African native so probably got away from someone or from a pet store. Cool looking lizard.
