This is just a random list of species I'm looking for. I know some will be available from members here, while others may be hard to find. The only dimensional requirements are listed after the wood name

1. Texas ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) - minimum 12" length

2. Desert ironwood (Olneya tesota) - minimum 12" length, but preferably 18"+

3. Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) - minimum 18" length

4. Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)

5. Cortland Apple (malus domestica cultivar) - needs to be verified Cortland Apple tree.

6. Sour/Tart Cherry (Prunus cerasus) - minimum 1.5x1.5, but 2x2 or larger preferred

7. Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium) - minimum 1.5x1.5, but 2x2 or larger preferred

8. Brown's Rosewood (Dalbergia brownei)

9. Coinvine (Dalbergia ecastaphyllum)

10. Hawaiian sandalwoods (santalum spp.) - there are several. I'll take any.
 
I'd bet the Sweet cherry I have has powder post by now. We will have toi check it out when you stop over Saturday. I have Sour cherry still standing. Have Apricot in the round as well. Might have a line on Rose of Sharon...

Cortland apple....you do know that 95% of Cortland apples are grafted on semi-dwarf or dwarf stock, so the stem stock is rarely Cortland unless the tree is a standard.

I certainly don't want you felling any trees just for me! But if you have something already milled up, I'd be happy to work out a deal on it.

I did not know that about Cortland Apple. Cortland Apple is my wife's favorite apple, which is the only reason I'm looking for some. It doesn't necessarily have to be lumber or big pieces, so branch stock could be fine. Is orchard cortland still grafted, or is that a process that's done if it's used as an ornamental tree?
 
I have some Desert Ironwood pieces. You mention 18” long, but what other dimensions (width x thickness) are you most interested in?
 
Okay- I had some logs I quarter-saw cut for a member. He got the primo pieces, but I still have the others. This species is notorious for cracks and voids, but I’ll see what I have left. They were long pieces that I cut. Probably 30” or more.

Sweet cherry is readily available in Europe. How much do you want? Even the big box stores have some. Overpriced but they have it.

Nearly all orchards now use grafted dwarf stock. So you might be limited to branches. There are a few dozen orchards along US 20 in NY and many in southern PA. I'd reach out to them and see what you can find.

Yeah I intend to check with local orchards. I just figured I'd check here as well. My wife is from Londonderry, NH, and there's an orchard up there that she always got cortland apples from. That was essentially the genisis of this plan. Unfortunately her parents don't live in NH anymore, so we never have any reason to be in the state.

Well, if for her, I'd reach out to orchards there (NH) first. If you find some, road trip HOME is almost always worth it. The kids might not get it, but for you and her....it would be.
 
Hi @Big Ry I have a nice big piece of sweet cherry (prunus avium), kiln dried and planed. Cut by a forestry major who was sure about it, so I trust the identification. I have some persimmon too. I'll post a picture when I get home tonight. If you end up getting some cortland apple can you save a piece for me? If a branch I'd need 2" diameter (or greater) and 20" long, but it would need to be straight.
 
Hi Eric @Eric Rorabaugh If you end up felling the Rose of Sharon and it yields a branch or log 2-4" diameter (or greater) and 20" long can you save a piece for me? I would love to try it! I see you are in Wythville. I drive up from Raleigh to Christiansburg/Blacksburg several times a year - and could meet you there anytime (even in the next few years) - but don't cut it special for me, only if you are felling the tree for other reasons. I certainly don't want you felling it for me.

Yeah I'll have to see how far away it is. But i might try locally first. I already contacted solebury orchard in New Hope PA, as they claim to have some Cortland Apples. We'll see what they say.

Awesome. Thanks. And yeah I'll keep those dimensions in mind as I'm looking for cortland.. That length might be difficult, but I'll see what is out there.
