Rules discussion

Would a poll help on this topic to hear from members- to get their thoughts on memberships and donations so the mods can get a gauge on what needs to be implemented?

Those don’t participate on this poll could result in being banned and lose their selling privileges by the Warden……effective immediately :sarcastic:

Never did like those geetar folks

I do appreciate what Greg and the guys are saying and it's not lost on my feeble old brain, and I do see that I have over utilized the sale thread at times, so I'll back up some, but I've just got so many goodies that I've just recently discovered, I just want to share them with everybody, ( and make a few bucks ).

I pretty much lost any interest in the wood when my bride was so sick and passing and it's taken the last 10 years for me to actually have any interest in anything, the wood, people, life, but I'm back and some overzealous, so please guys, forgive an old fart for having buck fever.
In my humble opinion, your recent zealousness has been really encouraging. I don’t want you to throttle back in the least. As long as the WB members are buying your wood, there should be no restrictions. If/when sales drop off, you will have reached the ceiling in sales, at least for awhile. Back to supply & demand. Chuck

I missed this recent update on this thread, so not sure what kick started it. If it was Joe's ( @shadetree_1 )apology for selling a lot I never felt like he was overselling or monopolizing things. I recall you posted a photo of a pile of self-harvested desert iron wood and where else would I find desert iron wood. And I echo the comments that I think the mods are doing a fine job of maintaining the right type of selling and not allowing the commercial sellers (to me a commercial seller is someone who's primary source of income is selling lumber and who sells in large volume). I think a commercial seller who periodically finds particularly interesting, different, high end pieces of wood and offers it here with the extra photos etc is providing a useful service to WB members. If they list their website address and someone wants to make a large volume purchase they can take it off line. Certainly don't want someone offering 2x4 x 8ft pine studs or 4x8 sheets of plywood here. As for pricing, I figure that self-regulates. I'm not a seller and I only make stuff when I have a need, but I really do appreciate having this resource for unusual, high quality, small volume unique woods. As for the comradery and all that - what did Groucho say... "I wouldn't belong to any club that would have me as a member" or something like that.

Rules, just the word brings memories. About 2012? I talked to Kevin about having fundraising auction. We went at it in back room for a month. Finally I said it. Not about your pride, it is about the members pride. I think they want to help. If I am wrong, i will be only contributing member. He very grudgingly agreed.
I think that in the 13 plus years I have been here that was the craziest , funnest week on here. I ended up with as much wood as I auctioned and bought nothing. Duckman sent me his winnings. I miss him.
As things evolve we have to stay flexible enough to accommodate change. Not if change will happen, we are always changing even if we do not want to acknowledge it. My success in life has been because of adaptation when needed. I owned 3-4 computers in 2005 but could not turn one on. Others did that. 1/6/06 i sat down an asked Kathie to get me started. I was an ebay whore for years. Then we needed new phones in 12 or 13. Kathie said what are you going to get. I looked and there was 1 funky flip phone. Ok, down the the smart phone road. Yikes. 14 without me knowing, lovely wife set me up on FB. Wow, talk about world at your feet for someone that had always been a want ads junkie.
It is hard to change, but you need to embrace it. Because once you stop taking that leap of faith that you can do it, you will be right and end result your world gets smaller.
You know what is top of list for dementia cause. Lack of social contact. Humans are not supposed to be isolated. Be a whimp, buy those hearing aids, go out in world and interact. You mind will thank you for it.
Speaking staying busy, got to get to work, I have 80 more knife blanks to complete 2500, makes a guy want to throw his knifes away. Enjoy

You cannot dislike that specific group which I know you cater to. That is like me saying “never did like those grumpy elders”…..
You know i am kidding you. I enjoy your design and vast wood knowledge.

I know Mike and likewise. I know we are having a little fun at each other’s expense AND we can’t keep doing this because we end up side tracking the original intention of the threads……….now we await for the Warden’s verdict to give us a summon (s)………you for just being your elder self and me for just being Jankee @$$ (that is slang courtesy of Pedro when he was a Redsox)……..I am jelly donut and dark roast coffee ready though for the Warden……how about you? What you got to barter with the Warden? :sarcastic:

I am going to hide in shop and leave it to you to tell that. Damn warden to stuff it. 👋

to keep the small community feel and not get to commercial with the wood selling aspect of it
Ok, this right here is what it's about. I wasn't here to get to know Kevin so can't chime in on anything before I joined. But I'll put my two cents worth in...
The mods have been discussing this for a while now and have made decisions so far. Now I'm for more sellers as are several here but the commercial sellers are not welcome. Several have been banned. Joe was a member here way before I started and from what I understand, was more than a seller. Just want to say this now before I go on...Joe, I am so very sorry for your loss. I don't know what I would do if I lost my better half. OK, back at it. I don't see Joe as a commercial seller. Has he posted a bit here lately, yes. Does that mean he's a commercial seller, no. He has really good prices and that's part of our small family deals. He is passing his hoard onto others. IMO, keep doing what you're doing. Mike sells wood too. Is he a commercial seller, no. He doesn't sell as much as he used to because of the rules here. He has good prices on what he sells too. I sell but ain't a commercial seller. Don't sell as much as I used to. Boeng and bugs pretty much only sell. Are they commercial sellers, not as I define commercial sellers. They have good prices and everyone has gotten exactly what they bought. If you look at FB at some sellers, there are scammers out there. That is what we really try to keep out of Woodbarter. I think we have kept up Kevin's vision for this site. Even though there are some that sell but don't really add to anything else. Those keep prices reasonable and only sell here and there. Are there always going to be quarrels, yes. Are there always going to be people that get mad and leave, yes. Are we going to be able to make everyone happy, no. Are we going to try and keep things civil, yes. Are we going to keep this FAMILY going, abso-freeakin-lutely!!!! I think of everyone here as my friends. I go to SWAT to sell every year now, thanks to Tony and Bean_counter, but more to meet people and hopefully people from here so I can put a face with a name. If I made anyone mad with this post, I don't really care. 😆 But that's what makes us Woodbarter. Not everyone is gonna like what is said but we can talk, be civil and move on. Let's keep doing what we're doing and work through the things that come up. No, to grab a shower and go enjoy the day on the beautiful island of Oahu. MAHALO!!!

And I'm not like a lot of Wardens. I believe in enforcement through education. I give more warnings than summons. I'll take the coffee but rather have a biscuit and gravy but not here. I've had some good food so far. Tomorrow we're doing the Polynesian cultural deal. Gonna immerse ourselves into that culture. Tour their villages, have a luau and then enjoy a show with them and not the touristy ones I'veheard bad things about. I would rather learn about cultures than do the touristy bs. Being a history fan, going to Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona on Thursday. Gotta honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation.

Please give my heartfelt thanks and respect to the men of the Arizona when you go my friend, I spent 65-66-67 overseas and a lot of us did not come back, I was lucky, but I love every man and woman who died for us ! God Bless America !
I know this doesn't belong here but I had to say it when one of our own is going there !

Not sure where you can go on Oahu that's not touristy these days. Maybe take a drive out toward Kaena Pt, especially around sundown. I was stationed at Schofield Barracks for 3 years. Hawaii is a complicated study of contradictions.

We have under your criteria at least commercial seller.
But that is a bad definition. We should not condemn a commercial seller if they follow our rules.
The person i have in mind does.
We should not limit our sellers for wrong reasons. People that fit our parameters should be welcome. What they really do elsewhere should not matter.
My opinion, if they have passion for wood and follow the rules, nobody should care.
Need to concentrate on the scumbags that only come to rip folks. Off. My lighting group produces plenty of those. 95% are wanted ads. People are eager to buy something they have looked for for years at a bargain price. And people absolutely throw caution to the wind and accede to sellers wishes and send F&F. And poof, the seller is gone. At least 1 every other week. 6200 members. And those are ones that admit to it.

Oh nothing at all (I don’t go there, I go to Cane’s), he can get that in the mainland and if he wants to immerse himself in the HI culture, he has to eat and go were the locals go. Sun down into the night at Waikiki beach is where you need to be for music, the sound of the waves, fresher air (and the flowers) and traditional Hawaiian music…..

Our own Don from what he told me used to work at “The Pink Palace”. He had some old koa trim from there. It is one of the oldest charming hotel in Hawaii- it bend all the rules where the new hotels would not be allowed to get that close to the water or build that high. There was a rule where you can build only to the highest tree in the property (or in the area).

Eric see if you can make it to the Iolani Palace and find time to get to Martin McArthur and Diamond Head.
