It feels like I've fallen victim to an eBay scammer. A visit to the nearby FedEx depot revealed that the tracking number entered into eBay is for a completely different shipment of 7 packages from a major retailer to an address in my town.

Could it have been a typo when the seller was entering it into eBay? Sure. But what are the chances that a typo would (a) match a valid active FedEx tracking number, and (b) the delivery address on that tracking number would be in the same zip code as mine (which made all the tracking updates look sufficiently genuine to not arouse suspicion)?

Slim odds, I would say. Requested a refund and reported suspicious seller activity.
It hurts. I feel you.

Definitely sizing up that way! Thank goodness for the ability to dispute a credit card charge!

Correction time: what I had labelled as "lignum vitae" is, I'm 99% certain, actually vera wood, often sold as "Argentine lignum vitae". I was browsing Paul Hinds' site and remembered he'd done a comparison between them, it's pretty much a guarantee I'd been calling it the wrong thing.

It's basically a stand in replacement. Unless you are making ball bearings for nuclear submarines.

I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly eBay took care of it - I think "suspicious seller activity" might get faster action than simply "didn't arrive". They got the PayPal refund processed in less than 24 hours.

Straight onto Amazon and bought an identical product, cheaper, with free next day delivery because I'm in a "30 days of Prime free trial".

Just spent hours working the back of the 1" chisel on a 400 grit waterstone, there was a bit of a hollow. (It reminded me of attempting to get rid of end grain tearout by sanding - basically a losing proposition as you have to remove 98% of the surface material to bring it down to the level of the 2% that is low.)

The next one I'll start with 320 grit PSA sandpaper to get the hollows out before moving onto the waterstones.

If the chisel is hollow, it might still be a perfectly good chisel. In fact, hollow chisels are better.

As long as the area right before the edge and the sides are in one plane and flat, the chisel is a Japanese styled chisel which is much easier to sharpen.

Interesting - I have seen photos of the Japanese style chisels 6yyyyt555555555555555555555555555555555556 (sorry, my cat just stepped on the keyboard, what are you going to do? :whatever:) but never had one. I don't think that was the intention with these Czech-made chisels though, based on the text on the Taylor Tools website: "Bevels are ground to 25 degrees. For optimal performance, the backs will need to be flattened and the bevels sharpened."
