Nothing wrong with a wood stove, I considered it for my shop but I didn't want to give up the space that it would take. I also wanted to keep it heated all winter so I could store glue and finishes without freezing.

Now I'm thinking about doing an electric hypocaust instead of a stove. Not as good at using waste wood but probably cheaper long term and also "constant" temperature. Sand in a steel barrel heated with a simple heating element over night. Same concept as radiant flooring for a significantly lower initial cost. Purchased most of the wood for building the extension. Will hopefully have all materials by the end of Friday and, if the next couple days work out, a good start on the gravel base. Electricians quotes for running power to the location have come in lower than expected, too! Very excited to finally be doing this.

Fine Woodworking published a "workbench" book some time ago. It has a lot of good info about shop layouts and organizing your tools for optimal use. You might see if you can find a copy.
