The cheapest shipping I found is $9.70 USPS flat rate envelope which is insured. . I dont think you can put these small pieces in a regular envelope with stamps . Let me know if I am wrong !
As you can see on the picture I purchased this wood from ANCIENT WOOD , LTD probably 10 years ago .This was part of Bundle #3 -2 BF. I 0nly have one original certificate of authenticity .I am cutting a larger piece of the wood into pen blanks . If there is an interest , I can just sell the one piece as is . It measures 9 X 13 X 1 1/4 inches . Make me an offer !!!!!

I wasn't implying you're trying to cheat anyone. I was just wondering how I would authenticate it to a customer.

With all due respect . I guess the answer Bill , to your question is I can't authenicate that the wood is really ancient kauri . When I bought it from Ancientwood LTD I did not know for sure. It could have been fake . The live trees still grow in New Zealand . The cut and dry wood probably look the same . THe difference is how much radioactive carbon has been radiated over the years. Only a professional lab can test that. . I have heard that carbon dating is not all that good !!!
Tell me your thoughts about authenicating wood . By the way. Bill , have you ever purchased any of my wood ? Cant remember my friend .

Without a certificate you really can't. Like you say they could be being dishonest with you and you have no way of knowing. The only other wood I've purchased similar to something like this was some pen blanks from the Shawshank tree on FB marketplace. In that case each blank came with business sized card of authenticity. I did the research of that person and found her is the legitimate owner of that tree that got struck by lightning.

I think this ancient Kauri is fascinating! It's by far the oldest thing I've ever come across... other than water, some rocks, and perhaps the Sun.
If @Nature Man passes on the larger piece, I'd like to learn more about it. For example, is the "long grain" along the 9" or 13" side? Is it square or might there be a live edge involved? A photo or two would likely answer all these questions and more.

THe long grain is along the 13" side and no live edge . Very fine grain but light weight . I will try to take a picture tomorrow. Did you watch that Dallas / New York football game yesterday ? A real thriller !!!!
I have/had no problem believing this wood is what it's claimed to be. I would buy with confidence.

Carbon dating is inaccurate within 1,3% spectrum so 1,3% of 50000 ~ 600 years. In other words it’s almost certainly measured within the 30000-50000 range to make sure no one can claim they got it wrong. Also unlike amber, kauri resin continues to harden over time so with a simple test of the kauri resins hardness one can get another reading to compare to.
Joe, why can't you just send a copy of the certificate with the wood? You simply write the word copy on it. Then the buyer can pass it along if they in turn sell the wood.
