SOLD .....Ancient Kauri

Nice blank & cooler than can be imagined to have such an ancient piece of wood in your hand and the opportunity to purchase it at a reasonable price! And no doubt older than dirt itself!

Did anyone else read the read the Certificate of Authenticity statement "tests verify this age beyond doubt" right after looking at the age estimation of "30,000 to more than 50,000 years old"?

I would think that a guess of a 20,000+ year window of time indicates plenty of doubt of actual age by the testing & certification people. Not that it isn't certifiably old, but that the science of Radio Carbon Dating seems to leave such a large window of time that it is not the accurate depiction of age dating that it is professed to be.

Just an observation in the irony of an unreliable science that i personally am highly skeptical of, not meant to detract from the sale of the awesome piece of wood in anyway at all.

If @Nature Man passes on the larger piece, I'd like to learn more about it. For example, is the "long grain" along the 9" or 13" side? Is it square or might there be a live edge involved? A photo or two would likely answer all these questions and more.

You can do much more accurate radiocarbon dating, but there's a bit of finesse to it, and some types of sample are known to be biased (and some types of bias can be corrected for). I can't really evaluate these dates without a lot more information than we're given here. But usually radiocarbon dates don't have nearly that much uncertainty -- maybe a few hundred years, maybe over a thousand, but not 20,000 years. Again, I'd want to see the technical details.

It's also possible that what the writer meant was that kauri wood in general was deposited in bogs over a period of time between 30,000 and 50,000 years ago. The specific sample we have here may have a much more precisely known date -- or maybe it hasn't been dated at all. They might only mean that it just comes from some time within in that timeframe. They could have phrased that sentence a bit more precisely.

This overlaps with my day job (biology professor), so I've got a bit of background knowledge, even though I don't specialize in radiocarbon dating itself.

Tell you what: I'll take a chunk of that, if you can throw in a photocopy of the certificate. I'm not going to make anything out of it, though. The biology department where I work has a small herbarium, and I've been gathering interesting wood bits, when and where I can, in order to build up a small xylarium for them. (I may end up joining the IWCS; we'll see.) It's nothing much right now, but maybe in a few years I might have something interesting. I know our botanist would get a kick out of this.

I have two pen blank sized pieces that are 7/8 x 7/8 x 6 " long and 7/8 x 7/8 x 5 " long that are $10 each plus shipping . I can include a copy of the certificate and cipy of the brochure . I am not going to cut the larger piece now . Want to sell the whole thing.

My load arrived sometime in the last few day ... I was in another state. All looks like fun!!! Thanks much for the packing peanuts :cool:
