We walked by those places but didn't stop for pictures. We'll be back down there tomorrow evening for a sunset cruise.
Oh yeah, you can go by Hemingway's old house and see his six toed cats. They're running all over the place.

Did you do the tourist thing? That mile zero sign is right outside the Green Parrot Bar.

Above the 'S' and below your hand, did you see the blood? My niece cut her thumb and rested her hand on there to adjust her shoe before taking a selfie 10 days ago. Go a life time and never see something, then bam, twice in a month....

Ha, no, that photo was taken in 2009. That's a buddy who went to the Amazon fishing with me and we had to overnight in Miami on the way home.

We plan to see this tomorrow if time permits. Relaxation & enjoyment are top priorities so some downtime poolside is going to happen first. Seeing a house museum is little lower on the list.

Wow, they must have used lead based paint since the two pictures look so much alike, even the smudge on the 'S'. Otherwise I'd assume fading.... Or they just touch up as needed.

That's it!! Looks pretty much the same. I always wondered though, it says "End" and how are we to know that's not the "start" of Hwy 1? Since nearly every numerical counting scheme (apart from launching rockets into space) starts with a low number, you'd think mile Zero would be the start rather than the end. It also looks like they haven't painted the Green Parrot since I was there.

Last night in Key West. This one was taken about a mile out on a sailboat sunset cruise. Calm waters tonight so a smooth ride. The captain found a few pods of dolphins for us. Unfortunately, no wind tonight so no actual sailing.

Well, that clears up the "beginning" and "ending" conundrum, but like Jonathan pointed out, how can both ends be mile zero? The government is messing with our heads again.

Two different governments…
Yes, 2 different governments. It is a US highway, but the mile markers are assigned by the state. Depends if the miles are counted from south to north or the north to the south as determined by designated state.

Freeways starting from the west coast start at zero mile, and proceed east with the number of miles increasing until it reaches another state line boundary. Arizona's western boundary at the Colorado River on I-10 starts at 0 miles and continues east 387 miles to the New Mexico state line between San Simon, Arizona and Roadforks, New Mexico. From there to Anthony, Texas is 163 miles. From there, that state with a lot of deer and WB members is about 880 miles across to my home state of Louisiana which is 278 miles across the southern part of the state on I-10.

As far as roads leading North South in Arizona, 0 mile starts at the US/Mexico boarder at Nogales and increases until it reaches the Utah state line. It then starts at zero again increasing until it reaches the Idaho or Wyoming state lines. ......Wow, I sound like a geography teacher, and the best part is, I've traveled those hiways numerous times.

Now, Mexico is different somewhat. To get to Mazatlan, Mexico, by train from Nogales, it goes through several Mexican States. At each train station along the way, the signs only indicated how far it was to Nogales, Mexico/Arizona. In other words, Mexico wants people to know how far it is to the U.S. .............. In PA around us, interstates start with 0 in the south and in the west.

So any state or county or city or local marijuana infused mayor can establish whatever mileage post system they want, all willy nilly and mumbo-jumbo'd? Jeez, it's like Mony Python is in charge. I'm positive there's been studies that blame this foolishness on climate change and if there isn't, I'll develop one later today after I have my cereal.

Side Effects Warning: Do not read mileage signs if you are crossing state lines or have a pension for practical, common-sense systems. Reading and utilizing mileage signs may result in confusion, multiple referrals to road maps, Gazeteers, and/or Google Earth. Failure to research and understand which state you are in and how they number their highway mileage posts may result in marital angst with recommendations of "Why don't you stop and ask someone?" which can increase and become more forceful over time. Do not read and follow roadside mileage posts if you are allergic to knowing where you are and how far you have to go.
