Have this decent sized block of wood. Roughly measured out 7.5 x 9 x 9” . I calculated it to something around 4.5 bf.

Weighs approx 13 pounds. So approximately 3 pounds/bf. No distinct odor when I trimmed it on the bandsaw. Had some spectacular figure maybe related to the knots (there’s a couple). Also shows some nice chatoyance. Pic is wetted.

Has a golden hue. Maybe Koa? (Wishful thinking 😀)

I sanded the end grain to 400 and tried to get a couple decent pics . 1/16” scale.

Any ideas?

My guess before I read was koa. Is that fresh cut face?
Yes, I trimmed the sap off the 4 “corners” and kinda wrapped around because there were powder post holes in the sap. It’s old and dry and no damage to the heartwood, but I wanted to get rid of the holes.

Looks like Koa to me and the weight seems right. Figured I’d post the pics of the end grain and I can see it’s diffuse porous like Koa too.

Not likely Koa, Koa does not have rays so noticeable. Not likely Sapele or big leaf Mahogany either. Looks kind of good for 'Cuban'. I was thinking 'Copperpod tree', Peltophorum pterocarpum. End grain and face grain do look right. Need to think a bit more.
