What did you do in your shop today?

A short time ago I posted that I got two pieces of lilac from a neighbors yard. I sealed the ends expecting to get to them soon. A recent post pointed out how bad it cracks. I checked mine last night and one has cracked. Shucks..

That is not bad. The check is basically a straight line. Now you know where to split it. Common lilac often has spiral grain and checks that way, so you are one ahead already. You should get some nice wine stoppers, pens and spinning tops from it and make people happy.

Thanks Mark. I’ll take a look.

Every time I finish a basket illusion, I say I'm not going to do one for a while. However, a few weeks ago my nephew (Cheyenne, Wy) told me they are coming back for a summer visit and are planning a 10 year wedding vow renewal ceremony. It's a big deal as when they got married almost no family was able to go to Wy for their wedding.

Didn't have time to do one as large as the last one, so came up with this eight inch cherry bowl/basket. Design is same basic one I used on the maple basket, a double ring, with some subtle changes and scaling to fit the size. I just finished up the inside and am a little over half done with the outside. The ceremony is on August 4, so plenty of time to finish it.

Stunning work, as always. This will be a family heirloom for them! Chuck

I assume you'll put their anniversary date on the back?

Got all my outdoor lights reconnected and put back in place this morning. Did it without turning off the breaker (not sure how I would have figured out which breaker it was without any lights to turn on or off) and didn't electrocute meselves so that's done for a few years. They look new.

Ready for Christmas already?

Yuck yuck, no, our HOA would send me a nasty letter if I put up Christmas lights this early. We don't put up outdoor Christmas lights any more. I had to clean and repaint my porch lights and the lights outside the garage after painting the house - they looked really bad.

I am open for adoption Tim @trc65 :greeting::sarcastic:. I am low maintenance, have a stash of good wood and I promise you that I will not rummage through the goodies in your garden……..if something is missing, my pointy finger like a compass will be heading towards them pesky critters that awaits for when the loot is ripe and ready…….what do you say? :itsadeal::five::drinks:

Deal!

I don't even care about raiding the garden! I always raise much more than we ever eat and preserve. Try to give as much away as possible, but so many people aren't even willing to come out and pick it themselves. They love to get it as long as I pick it and deliver it to their door.

Sounds like my Sister.

Many eons ago when I went down to Texas to pick up a drill press from @Bigdrowdy1 and met up with a bunch of Texans. We traded wood amongst each other and had a good time. @Tony gave me a bunch of Mesquite thins, being thats not a wood we get in Michigan I happily grabbed them. Ive had them in my stash for a long time trying to figure out what to use them for. And I have a scroll saw project now that is perfect for them.
So here's a few of the thinner ones.

I ran them through my drum sander to clean them up, they where fresh off the bandsaw mill.
20240729_164433.jpg A few passes nice and slow on each side cleaned them up. 20240729_170750.jpg
It sure is pretty wood. Feels hard too.

They cleaned up at 3/8" perfect for scrolling.
