What did you do in your shop today?

Well I got the approval at the church today to sell these crosses. More of a donation to the benevolence fund. For a donation of $20 dollars or .ore you can pick a cross. I had a man on another forum request 2 of them, so I think these are gonna go fast also. So I started prepping stock for another batch.
Anyone care to guess this species?

More to be planed down. A mix of maple, box elder, and one piece of walnut.

A burn day is in my future. Or at least get it carried upstairs to the outside burn box.

That ash is going to be beautiful. I really love ash with a clear poly on it to highlight the reflective specks in the grain.

Finished planing the stock.

Some of the box elder has some nice flame figure in it.

Filled the dust collector again so I emptied it.

If this one doesnt blow up when I'm routing it I may have to keep this one for our house. :sarcastic:

That FBE cross is going to be awesome! Definite keeper! Chuck

Another short day at work. So I came home and went to the shop.
All sanded.

And with the first coat of blo. I love how warm a pure oil finish looks.

I'm thinking the Catalpa is going to look good with a blo finish.

I was thinking more “what if you book-matched it” where each halve will become a front and back of the cross. Then put a middle wood core like padauk, chakte kok or any color that will pull in the flame box elder hues.

Got a second coat of oil on a batch and roughed out a few more. Been experimenting with simple wipe on wipe off oil finishes to find something comparable to the Bush Oil I’ve been using for years. Problem is the solvents have a strong odor and dont ventilate the shop with an open door and suction fan to remove them in winter. The smell is irritating, kinda like CA. Latest product is this one and still nothing I’ve found compares to the rapid build and sheen of Bush Oil. Cost isn’t an issue but it’s cheaper too. Second coat of each shown here comparing the two on cherry.

Whats your favorite oil and wax finish for turnings?

I use my own mix of heat polymerized tung oil, citrus solvent and Japan drier. The heat polymerized oil dries faster than raw, but still not as fast as "commercial" polymerized oils with driers added. My mix dries overnight ~24 hours.

Get it from the Skin Boat store: https://www.coreys.us/

I've been using mostly the Tried & True Varnish Oil for several years. Recently I picked up some Tried & True Original and found that I like it even better. I'm a fan of both.

Got some shop time today so I changed a blade on the delta bandsaw. Trying out supercut blades, I ordered a few sizes to try them out.
First time I've used a 3/16" blade and wow, it cut awesome!

I got everything all adjusted for the smaller blade. I think its time for new thrust bearings on the saw. I noticed they are turning a little rough. But I dont think I ever had to push hard enough to make the blade contact the bearing.

I left a little gap between the cool blocks to allow for some movement when making tight turns.

Cut like butter in the soft Catalpa, effortless.

I quickly cut out a stack of blanks. The blade did well in walnut and maple also.

Im keeping this flame box elder for our house.

The sawdust producing machine. A dust mask was required. Someday I'm gonna have to cut a hole in the lower wheel cover and instal a dust hose port.

All cleaned up, inside and out.

I seriously have to have a burn day. Scrap is way out of hand.
