What did you do in your shop today?

A mix. Some pin oak, pignut hickory, Birch, and the square things on top are blocks cut out of the stump of the big red (slippery) elm in the background.
Funny you say that, I lost a piece of 'Slippery elm' in 2000 and planned to cut another when I was back in that area in 2015, but they were all dead. Looking for a flatsawn & 1/4 sawn sample of 'Pin Oak'. Which pignut and birch. Might lack them too.

Did you say pin oak? My God man, those are weeds around here!
I only know of one pignut hickory. It's a subspecies like shagbark is.
The ditch elm disease is really taking a toll on them. This one was growing in isolation, which is why it lasted so long.

Quercus palustris, Pin oak. I have a rift cut sample but lack a 1/4 sawn and flatsawn sample. Back in the day I had lots of it when a youth, set aside a single piece and foolishly selling off the other before realizing you need several samples of various cuts to show the species more clearly. Carya glabra, Pignut hickory. I lack a flatsawn piece. Same story as the pin oak. I had many of these woods and failed to see at the time.

Well, I expect I can help you with that. Might be a bit, as I am mudded out for a week or so.

Very nice. I would roundover the whole top edge before you put the finish on though. It's going to look great with the finish!

Well, lost my balance and fell in the shop. Luckly, could not go far being things are piled everywhere, from just a few feet to 6' high depending. Got thinking, if I was hurt, how long would it take to recover me. Found a sharpening guide. Hasn't been used in many years. It needs a new home along with this other stuff.

I have yet to use this clamp system.

One coat of (as the name implies) Rubio Monocoat. First time using it. Pricey but a little goes a very long way. This took a tablespoon. Very mat finish and very easy application. But court is still out.

With its mate.

Reminds me of a time I was busy in the shop and my wife called from the house probably 75' away. I couldn't answer at the time and after about 20 minutes I took a break and went into the house to check in with her. I asked her what she called for and she said she was checking on me to make sure I was alright! Ahhhh DOH Thank goodness I wasn't laying there waiting for her to rescue me.

I started my with saw maintenance. Started with 17 chainsaws, 5 of which run. After 4 hours of wrenching, cleaning, wiring, and mcguyvering I now have 16 1/2 chainsaws and 2 that run. Some days.......

Got some time in the shop last night and started rough turning some mug blanks.

Top three are ones that I rough turned a long time ago - I think before we moved 3 years ago - but pulled out because I want to get them in the process to finish them up. @Eric Rorabaugh - At least 2, if not all 3, of those top 3 are maple I got from you some time ago. So, two different batches of maple from you represented here, lol.

Today I'll drill them out and then put them away to dry. Some of these blanks are dry, but I'll still let them sit for a while after drilling out before finish turning.

In this stack are:
3 Spalted Maple (the top ones)
2 Russian Olive
1 Cherry
1 Monkeypod
2 Laminated (one is curly oak, walnut, maple, and mesquite and the other is maple, walnut, bloodwood, ash, and mesquite)
5 Ambrosia Maple
4 Pear

Some of the maple, including the top three, will need to be stabilized. So, guess that means I'm going to eventually do some stabilizing again, after a long hiatus from stabilizing! I'm not upset about that, lol. Have some other things that I can also stabilize along with it.

Think I'm eventually going to have to explore some sort of avenue to try to sell some of these... A few will get used for gifts, and we've already got a few wood ones of our own that we use.
