What did you do in your shop today?

Perfect fit for that spot! Professional craftmanship! How long did your wife wait for this? Chuck
Hi Chuck
Thank you for your comment
I am embarrassed to say nearly 20 years , spent the last 17 or so trying to be successful at screen printed tee shirts. Tied me up six to seven days a week until I just had enough a few months ago. Traded tee shirt lint for saw dust.......HAPPY
PS my tools patiently waited as did my wife.

I asked about the timing as I started a coffee table in 1997, and have never completed it! Glad you are into sawdust! Chuck

Today I finished the table my wife has waited along time for me to get to.

Nice table Mike, How did you achieve the detail on the lower part of the legs? I have made plenty of tapered legs, but the raised portion looks like it would not work with any process or jig I know of....

Yes that was my issue also but easily solved. The leg blanks are glue ups roughly 2 1/2 inches square to start.
To get the shape in basically two cuts I made a template from 1/4 plywood to the desired leg shape. This was double sided tape applied to the squared and trued up leg blank carfully roughed out on a band saw then shaped on a router table using a piloted bit similar to the one shown below. This gets 50% of the leg cut then simply repeat the same process on the remaining flat leg blank sides .
Draw carefull centerlines on your blanks and your pattern. Drill window holes in the template so you can locate center line over center line.
Attached are a couple of pics that should help. Note that you will need to add shims after the first cuts to support the template for the second cut run. Again see the picture

Take light cuts on the router table and be very careful about not making climb cuts with your router . The router I used is 3 1/4 HP and quite powerful. Getting involved with a climb cut can bring a lightning fast injury before you even know it can happen.
here is a typical treatment on climb cutting. https://stumpynubs.com/a-dangerous-router-table-cut/

Getting started on making a tortilla press. Need to do a glue up, so ripped some pieces and used my old SB #7 to joint the faces to be glued. Maple and some cherry accent pieces.

A friend wants a fountain pen for his youngest son. I always get at least 2 kits just in case. Glad I did….nothing horrible, just an assembly issue. Not sure if I assembled in the wrong order or I didn’t understand the assembly steps.

Used some of that claro walnut I recently bought. Lots of chatoyance, not sure my photo brings it out.

3 turkey pot call blanks. Still have a 2" thick pc left, probably for a bowl.
Also cut 2 cherry blanks to try a 1 piece striker.

End grain sealed and bagged the blanks just received from John @JD1137. Will leave them bagged for a while to get adjusted to the dry air of the shop before cutting them up.

Spent the last few days cleaning up/throwing out stuff. Way too many magazines with plans/ideas that I'll never get to use.
Got things back to 'working'
condition and turned this.

Thinking that since I've got a fair idea of making turkey pot calls.....I need to make my own strikers. Cut a piece of pine....good enough to get the concept....and went at it. Pleased at how it turned out....and even sounds decent on slate.
Will get some cherry, maple, walnut and hickory blanks to turn next. And try different designs......since I can't duplicate anything!!!
Each one......truly limited editions!!!!
No more buying strikers or dowels!!!!
😁
