What did you do in your shop today?

New PM3520C lathe arrived this morning. I don’t yet know enough hearty fellas to help and went back and forth on availability of rental equipment to aid in assembly of this roughly 750 lb monster. Decided to buy a hydraulic lift table like @woodtickgreg recently bought for his planer cart. Will post how I did this without any help besides the cart. This cart will extend my ability to easily move equipment around as needed.

It's a really cool cart, kinda too bad my planer is going to live on it because I can see how useful it could really be. I may have to get another one some day, lol.
And who dont like new tool day. Congrats Tim!

Congrats! Can’t wait to see it up and running! Chuck

Cut up the packing crate from the planer.

And made it dissappear.

So while I was at it I burned up the scrap box in the shop. 20231220_110749.webp
And the rest of the ash cutoffs outside.

6 hours of scrap burning today and it's finally all gone.

I made a 10 gage 220v extension cord for the new planer.
I started with a cord that I made with standard 110v plugs. I removed those and saved them for later.

All done.

And here it is with the planer. I think I need to make a hook to attach it to the side of the belt guard.

I was going through some of the ash boards to select which surfaces I wanted to run through the jointer.
Something shiney caught my eye.

I dug it out, the tip of a small nail. I already cut through it with the circ saw, lol.

Very small but enough to nick a planer or jointer blade.

This was a backyard tree. I even found some buckshot in an upper section of it when I was milling it.

That’s a nice extension cord! Don’t see that one ever getting warm! Good catch or lack of future catch of the nail. Worse thing I ever found when turning was a piece of a blade from what looked like heat treated scissors. Talk about tough!

Several years ago, I got some ash (and about 300 bf of cherry) from a guy who harvested it from a farm started by his great-grandfather. His grandfather & father had used the ash tree to sight in shotguns over the years, so there were pockets of buckshot embedded. The guy had used a bunch of that lumber to make trim for his house and his kids' houses--it was neat looking moulding.

When i ran into the buckshot on the pieces, I will say that lead shot is much softer and easier on the tools than the air-dried ash!!

Jointer is looking good Greg!!

Still settling in shop, going through boxes packed over 2 years ago. Have come across a couple boxes tagged “unfinished…”. Some need just a decision on finish including any dyeing. Other stuff a bit more ambitious such as pieces needing a bit of carving or sanding. The solo box elder burl piece I’m especially interested in finishing and thinking it kinda has a cauldron look so black and red may be a good fit. As for other pieces…hmmm, may be a good thing to work on in coming months.
What unfinished works do y’all have?

Kind of looked like a ribbed sheetrock nail....

I'll be interested to see how the cart works out for you. My first thought would have been an engine hoist. You can get a very capable but basic model at someplace like Harbor Freight, nearly as cheap as a rental, which I'm sure are widely available. Lots of useful accessories for them now too.
It is a cool looking cart. If I ever have a shop with a flat, reasonably smooth floor, I may look at one.

Few things worse than turning a planer blade into a molding cutter by accident. I say that justifies spending some cash on a decent metal detector.

Feeling a little better today than the last few days. Led worship this morning. Came home and relaxed for a bit, then made lunch. Relaxed some more - and fell asleep in the chair for a while. Woke up and wandered out to the shop to finish up our gift for my in-laws.

A couple years ago my in-laws finally realized a 40+ year dream of theirs to have their own park model at the resort they've been vacationing at for more than 40 years. We spend a week with them there each summer; we stay in one of the rentals there. Since they've gotten their park model, it's allowed them their own space to have their own things beyond whatever they would bring with them for their week or weekend that they would spend in a rental. My father-in-law loves his pellet grills, so has a smaller one there as well. (And a Blackstone was added to the deck there this year, which I really enjoyed cooking on.) With his pellet grill, one thing we've done the last couple years is a family pizza night where we've made homemade pizzas together - with the pellet grill, it gets some of that wood smoke flavor and we don't have to run the oven inside in the summer. My job has been dough and assembly, my wife and mother-in-law runners and helping in whatever way needed, and my father-in-law has cooked them. It's a great time and the pizzas are great - and extras are always made, because who doesn't love leftover pizza.

In the last couple years we've used wine bottles and unopened cans of beer to roll out pizza crusts and cutting has been a challenge, lacking a cutting board large enough to cut a pizza on. And the pizza cutter my in-laws have at the park model is one of those crappy freebie ones that's pretty worthless.

So, this gift is called Family Pizza Night, to be kept up at their park model for use there. It's more than a cutting board, rolling pin, and pizza cutter. It's family time and memories. This year we were able to change what week we are there to match when my wife's brother and his family will be there, so there will be more people and hopefully even more fun and memories.

Cutting board is walnut, cherry, and maple. Rolling pin and pizza cutter handle are cherry.
