What did you do in your shop today?

It's the axle for this ....

towel.jpg

I've needed one of these in the garage forever and just never got around to making one. Just kept moving a roll of towels around every time I did something on my bench. So today after taking my 97 year old uncle back to air port for his flight home, I whipped this up. Now I have to figure out where to put it so it's readily accessible BUT also so I'm not bumping into it all the time.

i stand corrected

Cool. I've seen a video with that technique - turning the dowel in a rack while feeding it back and forth into the blade? But that was way more effort than I wanted to put into this. It sits in the garage and is primarily an effort so I don't have to keep relocating the roll of towels all the time. Still haven't decided where to put it tho.

Today's effort.... hung the paper towel dispenser (bolted to the far left lower edge of the pegboard); drilled a larger hole and routed the power cord for my music thru the back of the bench (cord used to lay across the work space); scraped off the chunks of epoxy and other stuff so the bench top is smooth again; and cleaned up all the misc junk, scraps of wood, sand paper, rags, etc.

ready to start a new mess, er, project.

Took a rico-shayed egg shaped soft red sandstone rock to the left eye. My right eye been poor since college. Needless to say, hard to see just typing tonight. Been 2 days and everything still blurry. Doc said give it 2-3 days for the cornea and iris to bounce back and heal. Today I helped a 75 year old with a brake issue on her mower. Then worked on getting a 22 Kohler going. Took 3 hours just cleaning the fuel system from tank to cylinders. Was an adventure, kept losing tools in plain sight. Beer 30 is an idea, maybe next week...Doc said take it easy...driving me mad.

Really sorry to hear about your eye. Hoping and praying for full restoration. I don’t know how you managed to still do so many things. Chuck

Better morning, however yesterday started off good too. Local town paved a dirt road, they have yet to berm it, so loose stones everywhere. Some how...I clipped a rock, it did not come out the discharge side but out under the round deck edge that was hugging a highly valuable black walnut ( not really, just a 14" DBH). It hit the tree and came at me. It was like Matrix slow-moe, I just failed to move. I fell to my knees, somehow I turned on the left side drive wheel brake and covered my eye with the left hand, then fumbled to shut the key off with my left forearm. Ended up using my mouth. Knelt there wondering what damage may have happened for maybe a minute. Uncovered the eye and saw just white, bright white from it. Felt no blood, so started the mower, mowed back to the truck. I could not focus to see anything in the mirror. Closed the eye, took 25 minutes and finished mowing the lawn. Loaded the mower and opened the eye, it was like trying to look through thin white plastic. Saw shapes. The other eye is good enough to drive, so went home, showered, flushed eye and could see a lot better, color, but blotchy. Went to drill night at the firehouse and the medic benched me and sent me home. None of our ER have eye techs, so waited to the next morning to see the eye specialist.

Color is back, still have double vision. Balance is still off but for sure, improving.

Got out at daybreak, freed up the drive pulleys on the 22hp Toro and got it to drive. Rain started and in I came. We have had rain 23 out of the last 24 weekends.

safety glasses?

i know i sound like my wife

Ya, everyone has been saying the same. They work great for 10-20 minutes before the headaches start. Same issue with wearing a helmet or hat. So during high risk, I wear them, just not all the time.
and in this case that rock might have broken the glasses into shards into your eye. so no telling if they would have helped or hindered

Between yesterday and today finished the 2 handles for the other 2 small hollowing tools I made. Just fun projects and the blanks were on sale at one time at Woodcraft. Bundle of 4 cherry blanks and one of several osage orange. Perfect projects for those.

Now onto the bars for the Easywood beading cutters. By the way, those work great!!!!!

Did that Osage blank have some grain twist? Wouldn’t want to carve that. Though seeing as you used a lathe that’s not so bad.
