What did you do in your shop today?

I Prepped pen blanks. I enjoy turning a pen once in a while but hate prepping blanks. I will probably turn a few to give away in the next few weeks. They make good Christmas gifts for the service and skilled people that we all depend on. The lady that cuts my hair has recently taken up shooting in a big way, I've been wanting to give he a bullet pen. Our current mail man does a super job, my tig welding buddy that never charges for those 5 minute jobs will get one IMG_20251209_111555440.jpg

What blanks are those? I've made about 30 Bullet pens so far, and none of the blanks look like those...... Nubs

I use .308 cases because they are pretty close to a slimline tube length. Some of them have extra long tubes from some bulk 7mm tubing that I had. I just trim off the extra length when the epoxy is hard.

what about your Wood Barter buddies who offer incredible moral support to assist in your project builds and honest sincere criticism to help you stay humble, all free of charge?

Cleaned and reorganized the sand paper holder again! I really need to shut the cover when I'm turning!

I've got a multi purpose drawer under the lathe. Very efficient it holds little bits of worn out sandpaper, miscellaneous blanks and turning kits, and if left open also serves as a shavings catcher.

Sanded to 220 and two coats of water base poly. The poly raised the oak grain in places so will let it dry good before sanding again and recoating. It’s a trade off… no bad fumes and two hour dry/recoat times vs no grain raising stinky oil that takes a day to dry one coat.

After almost 10 months, I had a friend over and he helped me install a used pellet stove I picked up. It won’t do a lot for the large open area of the shop but it will help. I can really feel the difference in the wood shop area with the drywall ceiling. It warms up great with the Big Buddy propane heater. If I can get the pellet stove to get the outer shop up to 50, it would be great. We shall see, warm weather for another week..relatively speaking anyway. The exh and fresh air intake was much easier than I imagined……or feared honestly.

Should be a nice improvement. I was curious as to whether behind the stove if there should be a barrier of sorts to prevent the studs from becoming too hot. Chuck

The way pellet stoves operate with all the fans running and the dual wall stove pipe makes them almost zero clearance. Most only need a few inches.
Of course check with the manufacturer for each model.

I go back and forth between oil and water based polyurethane. I put oil based spar polyurethane on my stairs for durability but it was warmer weather and we opened the windows. Stairs are looking great.

Is the vent next to the exhaust pipe an air intake for the pellet stove?

Got the last finials for my ornaments done. There will be 20 of them when the last few are glued together. Then just have to get a top coat on the last half of them. Sorry no pictures yet. Waiting until the recipient of my ornament gets his.

Instead, here is a pic of what I start from. Take a squarish blank between centers, turn a 3/4" tenon, the use collet chucks to turn them.
