What did you do in your shop today?

Seasoning so it won't be effected by the cold. Don't they call that "hardening"?
Not just for the wood, I'm going through a "hardening off" as well. Above normal temps since before Christmas, and now we are getting back to normal with highs only in the 20's. No more light weight coat, socks and gloves, back to insulated everything

Only 13° today, but I had to bundle up to go feed the cats, so had to do a little something at the lathe. Some more fresh cut locust that will eventually be a hollow form. Maybe a basket illusion hollow form if I can get a reasonable historic shape out of this.

Not sure I am totally happy with my last purchase of spindle blanks from @Eric Rorabaugh look what he put right on top…..so yes, I had to start a project interrupting my cleaning and organizing. Geeez….. Thank you @Eric Rorabaugh , great box of blanks but this one just jumped into my hands. Going to be an ice cream scoop handle. A bit long, but if I cut it in half the blanks were going to be a bit short.

You have to watch the wood you get from @Eric Rorabaugh he sold me some awhile back that i couldn't get the wrinkles out of.

@DLJeffs , We might have to carry this into a private conversation but have been gearing up for some larger flies and more salt water flies. Even started building my own dubbing brushes. Bought a table off of Oasis Benches. I looked at building my own but his had so many useful features I splurged.

then I found a pill bottle of small (bluegill)sized popper bodies that had been glued up so colored them with Sharpies and have just been playing with them to just get back to tying. Just fun making those, I just dont have any good warm water ponds near me. For the rest of the folks on here, Texans call all sunfish bluegills. Or at least my dad did.

Well, the weather liars said dusting to an inch today. I was supposed to go to Paul's to meet a crafter. By 8am there was 2 inches, so I went and putz at my brother's shop. Worked up 11 samples. Snow stopped about 1pm, with 5-7 inches of powder on the ground. Went out plowing, got in about 10 tonight.

Top row: Amboyna burl with common wood interface, Machiche, 1/4 sawn, Double file viburnum
Row 2 : blank, Afromosia, rift cut, ribbon grained, Laurel blanco, 1/4 sawn w/pith
Row 3 : Apricot, 1/4 sawn, Baker's oak, over pith with sapwood, Hop-hornbeam
Row 4 : Mappa burl, Mopane, cathedral cut, Chechem

Forecasters sucked here too! Was supposed to get a dusting to two. We got 6 plus of heavy wet slop. I need to go out once it's light and start cleanup!

So, I told you that @Eric Rorabaugh made me do something with that questionable wood and have it ready to glue up. This was fun and exciting. Not sure which burl, but due to Eric location probably cherry, but could be maple. Since I am not sure, am just calling it beautiful burl. Finished with walnut oil and then 3 coats of Pens Plus on top with as much friction as I could get. Actually, I broke it off before I was ready but I was happy with my recovery. I think this was one of our weekly questions and definitely an area I struggle with. But I was already thinking about how I was going to turn it around to finish the chucked end.

A bit longer than I would normally make a handle, but I wasn’t going to short this piece. Actually fits my hand pretty well. Will have to test on some Blue Belle. One note, I was looking for some info on the Woodcraft website and I know I always look for sales on these type of kits. But I don’t remember the original price being as high as I saw it. Is this due to Covid or tariffs, or what, but it was listed for $29.95 or something close to that. That would be hard to sell at a craft show in my opinion. Have not done a craft show, so maybe not, just seems like the price really jumped. Then again my memory stinks.
