What did you do in your shop today?

Had a couple of the kids back into the shop today. Five of us total. The boy started a captured ring goblet and the girl just about completed a platter. Will post the work when completely finished. The pictured bowl had been completed earlier. He took it home today.

Love to see young folks getting into woodworking! That bowl looks super nice! Chuck

Warmed up a little today so I turned the piece that had been sitting on the lathe since Saturday:

Into this.

Still needs to be hollowed, but that will be quick work. Appears I'm going to have a series of Black locust hollow basket illusions.

It's amazing how different that looks from the roughed out shape.
And the look changes depending the angle/side you are viewing. Some crazy views when you have strongly colored grain lines. Cutting a bead essentially exposes 3 sides of the grain and the view changes with the angle. Can go from plain looking pale grain to deeply colored prominent grain patterns. Another angle.

Ain’t no forecasters, only weather guessers.
I think they are all paid by the grocery stores of the country to gin up emergency stock up milk and bread sales! One of the forecast is we might get snow, we might get ice, we might get rain, we might get all three. One says minor accumulation of snow with some ice, another says 6"+ with ice. Eeenie, Meenie Minie Mo! One says 3 deg for a low, another says 9 deg for a low, and the other I didn't even bother. I went to the big box and bought a couple of heaters, bought some gas for the generator, and set up the tent/canopy for the generator to sit under.

Same here Mike. I’m just a few miles below the Tennessee line and the guessers in Huntsville are flip flopping every few hours. I have a 100 lb LP piped to gas logs and 4-5 20 lb backups. If that fails I’ll take out the logs and fire up the fireplace. Most we have had before was 9 days w/o power in 1994. What I hate is not being able to use the shop when there is no electricity.

That’s a beauty just like that.
Thanks Alan. I've been thinking about these little locust forms and playing with design ideas. Want to do a series with a common theme.

Happened upon several images of baskets by Dat So La Lee (Louisa Keyser). She is widely recognized as the best artistic Native American weaver. Think I'm going to do a series using a different design element from her baskets on each form. Not trying to reproduce her form or exact design, but using recognizable elements. Stay tuned......

I have been thinking about leaving one of these forms just entirely beaded without a design. However, beading in wet wood leaves them a little rough. I'll need to convince myself to turn one of these thick, dry it and re-turn, then bead. What really sucks is I'm itching to get back out and turn a couple more forms, but weather dictates otherwise. The first locust form I turned a little over a week ago is already dry, so going to try and finalize a design for it tonight.

Definitely will be cool to watch you. Love how you pay homage to the past.

I'll probably start a build thread in a day or two just to start giving some background info on Dat So La Lee, her designs, life, etc. it's a fascinating history that's also a little tragic.

If you take the LP logs out, tape the fitting well, and blanket the line. A 50 lb. bag of playground sand works well, especially if you have a log grate to go over it.

Another from the shelf. First turned years ago. Curly ash and rattle can lacquer. Nothing fancy but the shape is starting to grow on me.
