What did you do in your shop today?

Tom - looks great.
If you want to ID, throw some shavings in a glass of water, if the water turns orange (let it sit for a while), it’s Osage.
If you have a black light check for fluorescence. Black Locust.
Otherwise- probably Mulberry.
Hard to tell the difference between the 3 species “just by looking” (unless you are related to @Mr. Peet :lol2:

John, thanks, I’ll try that. The heavy, thick bark is one of the reasons I thought locust initially. Osage seems to have a similar bark. There are no hedge apples around though. I’ve got mulberry in the yard but the bark is different.

@JD1137 John, whacha think? Don’t have a black light. Thought I did but it must be with that danged screw driver I can’t find. Wouldn’t mulberry bleed like this too?

The object has bark. Mulberry...never seen any with orange tinged inner bark, likewise with black locust.

Not exactly sure about your Mulberry question turning the water orange. My understanding is “no”, but to be honest I never tested it.

Otherwise- @Mr. Peet confirmed the Osage question with his comment about the orange inner bark as can be seen on your bowl.

Nice job 👍

John, thanks. Still haven’t labeled it. Recalled that I got it from a neighbor’s yard. He thinks mulberry, never any hedge apples.

By the way I found the locust. It was the piece under this one. It’s performing just like locust should, hard as woodpecker lips.

Here is a bark picture from Paul's site for Osage.

He has a dozen or so bark pictures for Mulberry, but they all have younger bark lacking deep fissures. There are dozens of mulberry live edge pictiures on line, but found none with mature bark or red coloring.

Below is an Etsy ad. It lacks that red/orange bark color as well. Not saying mulberry lacks the color, just saying I have not seen it yet.

Mark, thanks. I’ve also looked for bark pictures online but the results are inconclusive for me. I’ve got a smaller mulberry on the ground in log form. Been there a couple seasons now. The bark is not as furrowed but it was a younger tree. I’ve got to cut a piece of that to compare.
