What free wood did you find today?

I’m kinda torn about posting this here or in the “What’s in the Mail” thread. I shipped several packages of wood from Hawaii and did post a few items there. The last arrived today. Was supposed to have 6 pieces in it but was much larger than I thought it should be. The reason - this piece, a 7th, was included. More than twice the size of any I purchased. I saw it in the warehouse, commented on it and moved on. It didn’t have a price on it. Well, here it is, so technically it’s free wood I found in one of my packages. It sure pays to have fun conversation with the guys in the warehouse who do the packing and shipping.

Bet that made your day. Beautiful piece of wood.
I’m still on a cloud, Karl.

I’d really like to contact them and thank someone but I’m torn. If it was just the warehouse/shipping folks adding it without “management” knowledge and I get the wrong person on the phone I sure don’t want to get anyone in trouble. The inner me says I’ve got to acknowledge it though.

Just be kind of coy thanking them for the incredible wood without mentioning the extra piece specifically. Something like "what a great surprise, it's even better than I remember", or "it's so much more than I remember". If you are talking to the right person, they will ask you about your surprise. If you are talking to someone who knows nothing about the extra piece, they will just think it's another mainlander drooling over their wood.

@Tom Smart
YOU might try and call a local donut shop over there and pay tbem to deliver a dozen donuts to the warehouse/shipping department guys. Might charge you an extra $10, but well worth it for what you got!
Tell them it's from "the pleasantly surprised customer" fron VA.

Beautiful lumber! What do you think you might make with it? Chuck

There is now a new definition of “peanuts”. Wow!!!

I've given this a lot more thought now that the initial euphoria of finding a Koa slab in my box has ebbed. As much as I'd like to believe the wood fairy or a rogue warehouse worker gifted it to me, that theory does not make any sense. I just wanted it to. Has to be a shipping error. I'll call them tomorrow and sort it out.

Yesterday I went out to a place in the desert where people do a lot of shooting, but there are also a lot of landscapers who dump tree trimmings, trees and other landscape debris. There are also tons and tons of horse manure that I wish I could use some, but not today.
Any way, I found in the landscape litter some cactus innards from the Mexican Noplal cactus. It is a Prickly Pear cactus without the pricklies. It is up for grabs for $10 plus shipping. It will fill a Large Flat Rate Box without issue. Anyone who wants it, let me know. IMG_4685.webp

Karl, is this a lignotuber burl (at base of tree extending into the ground)? If you end up with any that fit sample size, I have some Apricot to trade, or other.

Tree was rotting at the ground and at the top of the tree. Somewhere in between it got more solid. Exactly what piece are you looking for?

This trunk sitting in a creek bed so the roots are in dirt and gravel.

Thinking about cutting the other edges from this piece for casters.

Appears you have a home run with this burl! Do you have any plans for it? Chuck
Mostly turning blanks sizes since I have to bring up everything up a steep ravine. Most of the wood has some burl so I'll have plenty extra to share here.

A few more of the piles. PXL_20230219_145309472.webp PXL_20230219_145256449.webp PXL_20230219_162532063.webp
