What free wood did you find today?

Tree was rotting at the ground and at the top of the tree. Somewhere in between it got more solid. Exactly what piece are you looking for?

This trunk sitting in a creek bed so the roots are in dirt and gravel.

Thinking about cutting the other edges from this piece for casters.

I saw this piece.

After seeing the stump shot on a different angle, not lignotuber but stump burling. Looking for a piece like the one I copied above.

Called the place in Kona where I purchased the Koa to tell them I received an extra piece. Response was “you lucked out”. I get to keep the wood and I’ll sleep better.

This was one of the pieces from the trailer load of burls. It was just cut off the tree when it was cut down. Took it inside to decide whether to cut down into blanks or trim up and sell whole. It dictated what is going to happen. Too big (~14×8) to saw the top and bottom flat on the bandsaw. So probably gonna take to the show and sell whole along with this box elder. Probably take several caps from the ones on the trailer when I get them sawed.

Two nice curly maple stringer boards from a mini pallet

Found them behind my old job, Ace Hardware. They let me take them because they usually pay for the garbage truck to take them.

Only two boards were maple rest were pine.
I'll de nail them, plane them flat, joint and will post another pic

Intense, in a good way! What are you going to make with it? Chuck

Hoping maybe to sell enough to buy a Hunter Korpro cutter for my Oneway Coring tool. This will allow me to core some of the burl bowl blanks faster and easier so less of this wood goes to waste. There just isn‘t enough time for the processing, pricing research, listing, packaging and mailing of wood so I don’t sell much here. As it is this wood cost a 300 mile drive and 3 days of work to cut up this tree and haul it up out of the ravine. Not a good way to make a living unless you’re retired like Mike. My day job pays significantly more than I could ever make selling wood here so I’d be foolish to take time off for this hobby. Also, my wife would not be happy if I used up all my limited vacation leave in order to work on my wood hobby.

Two years ago, while at a reunion in San Antonio, I half jokingly I asked a friend from Houston to send me some mesquite. It was late in the evening and we’d had a beverage or 3. Well, this showed up today. 19” x 8”, very heavy and about 15% MC.

I’m thinking I’ll try a hollow form and send it back to him.

Went out for a hike on a trail I’ve been on several times before, but something caught my eye this time. Found this tiny burl in a tangle of bushes and decided to take it home. Very glad I did. Turned out to be a small locust burl, not sure what kind of locust though. Should make some really nice handles for some skinning knives.
Looks pretty interesting under a black light too.

Conner, what is the density? That looks like 'Sumac' burl. They are more rare than 'Black locust' burl in the northeast US. I've found only 2, but both were loaded with borer damage and rot. Great score. It you find more, I'd like to work out a trade. My samples finish at 3" wide by 6" long by 1/2" thick, so a small burl could work.

Bristly locust is a possibility too. But the transition between growth rings is looking more Sumac like.

Here’s a picture of the end grain. It looks like locust to me, but I’m not entirely sure.
The second picture is more of a close up, and you can see a lot of tyloses in the pores.

Yeah, that does look like black locust end grain although it's hard to tell for sure since there's no scale on it.
