What free wood did you find today?

Sycamore wood from a friend's tree that was starting to die. Don't really have time to mess with more wood but I hate to see good wood go to the dump.

I'd like to retire early to spend more time working with all this wood, but my day job pays a whole lot better than woodworking. Guess I'll just keep dreaming for a few more years, and try to earn enough retirement savings to counter all this inflation.

I agree @Karl_TN. I hate seeing wood go the burn pile. My day job pays better than my wood does. I have to keep working so I can build a new shop and build a few sheds just for the wood. My wife and I were out and we saw an industrial building, probably 300,000 sq ft that was being built. I told her I need a shop about that size. She said "💩, you'd fill it up!" You know, she's probably right!!!

I just pointed out an old broiler house today and told my wife that was the shop I wanted. Her reply was similar

One of the strangest pieces of wood I’ve ever found. Seems like an early stage petrification. Looks like pine bark to me. It is heavy as slate and fractured easily. I polished up a few pieces to get a better look at the grain. Stunningly beautiful. Feels like cow horn once polished.

Sure looks similar to other petrified woods I’ve seen. Never thought about partially petrified trees before. Chuck

wood can be replaced my many different minerals, not just the silica as in agatized wood. a lot of the wood in virgin valley nevada opal deposits is soft and crumbly like silt stone, others there common or fire opal laid right next to the silty stuff.

i own a "petrified" wood log from Oklahoma that is barite replaced wood, shape of the original piece of wood, but the piece, 4" by 15" weighs close to 25 lbs due to the high specific gravity of barite
from google
Barite, a mineral composed of barium sulfate (BaSO4), has a specific gravity of around 4.5 grams/cm3
The density of woods varies from about 0.2 to 1.2 grams/cm3
The specific gravity of water is 1.000 at 4°C (39.2°F), which is the temperature at which water has its highest density

Great info! Thanks mate. That definitely solves it for me. I’ve never had any experience with petrified wood and was under the impression it was all hard stone like. Have you worked any that seemed like horn? This stuff finishes just like horn I’ve worked in the past. It made me puzzle over the composition

That would make beautiful jewelry flaked off in thin slivers and hung with silver wire .
If it's hard enough, that looks like a guitar pick from a woodworkers dream.

If you want some, I’ve got a bunch of smaller pieces I chipped off the larger one. Would be happy to send some your way
I am quite sure I would enjoy looking at them, but not so sure where I would stash them at the moment.
Carry on, if I can figure something out, I will see what you have left and if it's meant to be, it will happen.

silty wood replacements are able to be ground and polished with sandpaper since they are fine grained and basically dried clay like

Way cool!!!

Another friend grabbed some burls that were sitting on his dad's property for awhile. I need to get rid of this spring cold so I can get back to work in the shop to repay everyone. :)
