What free wood did you find today?

I had some issues on some of the samples you selected; these are missing:
cytisus spinosus (too small)
phyllirea latifolia (wrong ID)
albizia lopantha (too small)

I was able to cut these:
acacia saligna
quercus suber
quercus ilex
nerium oleander (many bug holes)
euphorbia dendroides

I was also able to cut pistacia lentiscus, (not very good - 2 pieces top right on picture below); when I flatten them I'll select the best one.

Shall I also add rhamnus alaternus (third from top on the right)?

Add the Rhamnus.

Worried about bug holes going through customs. Are the samples a bit over size to allow movement when drying and allow for finishing later?

What can I do about bug holes? Should I just remove the sample?
Yes, samples are oversize.

Should I ship to @phinds so that he can take endgrain pictures before delivering to you?

Paolo, thanks, but I have slowed down almost entirely on the wood front and I no longer do end grain regularly, so I'd say ship directly to Mark.
 
Hi everyone, sometimes you get real lucky and get some great free wood, this is one of those times. The first picture is of me al ready to get some free wood.
The second picture is looking to where the free wood is, in this case some wind blew down some Australian Red Cedar AKA Toon.
The third picture is of the Toon trees that blew down.
The fourth picture is of the logs that we pulled out of the forest.
The last picture is of my brother Dan next to the great batch of free wood. I hope you all enjoy the pictures. Aloha.

Bugs are a big risk. Customs often seize any questionable items. I don't want to be responsible for accidently bringing in new pest to USA. Maybe best to let you keep and use them.

I still participate in WB but I gave all of my veneer to Mark last year, sold all of my formal samples this year, and am in the process of getting all my wood books ready to sell. I no longer make bowls or do much of anything out in the garage/shop. I'm 81 and tired.

Any streaks, bug bores, ghosting fecal trails from bugs, ingrown bark, live edge, bark of any kind, inclusions, bird pecks, late stage of spalting or any unsual markings can trigger customs when it goes through the x-ray. If it has any of these things, it will be quarantine by customs for an options to the recipient of either phytosanitary treatments or destroyed. The recipient will get a letter via mail from customs and they would have a certain time to act and respond. The fee to spray usually is around $ 30-40 and it varies from country to country. I make a point when I ship any wood if applicable to say it has been kiln dried and or it has a film finish.

Australia is the most strictest country when it comes to exporting wood. Most of the time it will get quarantine. I know this by experience.

I used to ship multiple lfr of knife blanks to Aus. Each month. Never a hassle.

Come on Mike, that is small stuff- send big billets and I’ll give you my luthiers friends address in NSW. “On the recipient” write I TOLD YOU SO. I have sent black limba guitar bodies and that was quarantined. I have sent flame redwood top billets with a small black mineral stains from iron which was also quarantined. I have sent curly maple with some gray heartwood at the corners which was also quarantined. They hit my friend $ 40 each time to spray it. This happened more than I stated. I would never ever ship woods there ever again.

I have shipped 55 post office LFRB's of wood samples to Australia over a period of 8 or 10 years and never a problem. David Clark used to buy wood samples from US and Canadian vendors and have them shipped to me for pics for my site and then I'd send them on to him.
 
Well... these are the samples I got at the end (all roughly 85 by 170mm). Not very nice, but everyting seems to be cracked and bugged in Sardinia.

You have these listed as wood samples- send big billet sizes for guitar building and I guarantee you it will be most likely get quarantined.
